Nearly 40 Years After It Aired, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ Documentary Resurfaces Online

When it comes to behind the scenes stuff, Star Wars fans can’t get enough. Before the internet, fans had documentaries to keep them entertained. Fortunately, one long-lost documentary has found its way online.

Finally Seeing The Light

In 1980, late director Michel Parbot worked on a documentary about the second film in the Stars Wars franchise. Titled The Making of the Empire Strikes Back, it was rarely seen on television. After the film’s release, it was locked away to never be seen again.

Bits and pieces of this rare documentary have been floating on the internet over the years. Youtuber Adywan somehow found a copy of it on DVD at an auction. Being a major Star wars fans, he outbid everyone to own this jewel. Instead of keeping it to himself, he decided to upload it to YouTube for the world to see. “While the quality isn’t great, at long last we get to see the full one-hour documentary,” he stated on his Facebook page.

The Empire Talks Back

The hour long documentary features interviews with the cast about the film. What’s noticeable about this feature is George Lucas’ quick part in it. Fortunately, this leaves for more discussions with director Irvin Kershner and producer Gary Kurtz.

This documentary has spoilers all over, so if you somehow haven’t watched Empire, don’t watch this.

An Undeniable Masterpiece

The Empire Strikes Back was one of the first major sequels to make an impact in the box office. With a $30 million budget, the film grossed over $181 million during its first run. Re-releases have increased the overall worldwide total to $538 million.

Lucasfilm

While Star Wars have several movies under its belt, including Episode 9, nothing can compare to Empire. The film helped usher in a brand new era of sequels, and cinema is thankful for it.
