‘Sherlock’ And ‘Doctor Who’ In The Same Universe? One Easter Egg Will Make You A Believer!

Published

There’s nothing like a sneaky Easter egg in your favorite programming. Whether it’s a familiar character in the background or a logo lying around, they keep fans on their toes. One show managed to bring two unique worlds together in a grand way.

A Magnified Clue

While watching Sherlock, Twitter user merindab noticed a familiar sight. During the episode “The Lying Detective,” a logo of Torchwood is visible on a desk.

Twitter

Torchwood is the spinoff of the hit series Doctor Who. The series lasted four seasons before being placed on indefinite hiatus by creator Russell T Davies in 2012. Torchwood earned five BAFTA Awards, including a Best Actress win for Eve Myles.

Back And Forth

Strangely enough, this isn’t the first mention of Torchwood or Dr. Who on Sherlock. One promo photo features a book written by Lavinia Smith. In the Doctor Who universe, Lavina was the aunt of Sarah Jane Smith. Lavinia impressed the Doctor with a research paper she wrote about the teleological response of the virus.

BBC

Doctor Who hasn’t shied away from a Sherlock mention. In the 2012 Christmas special, the Doctor actually pretends to be Sherlock Holmes. In that universe, Holmes is a fictional character.

A Shared Universe?

These sly nods between Torchwood, Sherlock, and Doctor Who can only be done because of the BBC. While people write fanfiction about a Sherlock Holmes/Doctor Who crossover, many people believe it can’t happen. Steven Moffat, who has been the showrunner for both series, agrees that it’s not meant to be.

BBC

“It’s all right for Doctor Who. That’s fine. But it would change Sherlock’s life if he met the Doctor and knew that time travel was possible. He’d have to factor that into every crime he solved,” he told Collider. Fans will just have to enjoy seeing which Easter egg will arrive on their favorite show next.
