Dark Helmet’s Back: Rick Moranis Reprises Role For The Goldbergs

Published

on

Rick Moranis has been laying low over 20 years. The Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids star took an acting hiatus in 1997 to focus on raising his children. But now he’s back after a May 9 guest appearance on ABC’s The Goldbergs as Spaceballs’ Dark Helmet.

Dark Who What?

If you’re unfamiliar with Dark Helmet, Spaceballs, or even Moranis, don’t fret. The film is over 30 years old, after all. Spaceballs is a 1987 sci-fi film that parodies the original Star Wars trilogy, among other sci-fi classics. Initially, it received a lukewarm reception, though it went on to become a cult classic.

Consequence of Sound

In the film, Moranis plays Lord Dark Helmet. Dark Helmet is essentially a spoof of Darth Vader, with a drastically oversized helmet, short stature, and nerdy demeanor.

The Scene

Okay, so Moranis wasn’t actually onscreen in The Goldbergs scene. He simply did the voiceover work. However, for ravenous Spaceballs fans, that’s more than enough reason to check it out. In the scene, young Adam Goldberg has a dream in which Dark Helmet comes into his bedroom and the two have a duel.

Nerdist

Dark Helmet tells Adam he is his father. As the two battle it out with their Schwartz saber, Dark Helmet drops a script to a Spaceballs sequel he wrote. Adam loves it and vows to get the sequel made.

What’s Next?

The creator of The Goldbergs is a huge fan of Spaceballs. He hopes having Moranis reprise the role of Dark Helmet will help get the ball rolling on a possible sequel to the film. Would Moranis even be interested?

Consequence of Sound

Though Moranis hasn’t been on screen much, he has done some writing and voice acting throughout the years. Yes, he turned down an appearance on the Ghostbusters reboot. However, perhaps him agreeing to do work on the Dark Helmet reprisal bodes well for his interest in doing a Spaceballs sequel. As fans, all we can do is wait and hope. May the Schwartz be with us.
