Remembering The Incredible, Astonishing Life Of Stan Lee

Published

on

If you ask someone to name a comic book writer, their answer will be the legendary Marvel Comics creator, Stan Lee. The writer, known as Stan “The Man” Lee, created some of the most recognizable superhero characters ever invented, including Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, X-Men, Thor, Black Panther, and more.

So, when Lee passed away unexpectedly on November 12, 2018, the world mourned the loss of the most influential superhero creator. Tributes were made, specifically focusing on Lee’s incredible, astonishing life and career achievements.

Creative At A Young Age

Born on December 28, 1922, as Stanley Martin Lieber, Lee was encouraged by his mother to start writing. In high school, he adopted his nickname “Stan Lee,” and worked a number of creative jobs, including writing obituaries for local newspapers and publicity copy for a hospital.

Originally, Lee dreamed of becoming a novelist. Instead, in 1940, he started working as an office boy for the comic book publishing firm Timely Publications. Lee advanced to a writing position in less than a year.

At the impressive age of just 18 years old, Lee became editor-in-chief of Timely Comics, which would later turn into Marvel Comics.

Destined Soulmates

Lee had a life outside creating popular comics, including his 69-year marriage to his wife, Joan Clayton. Their marriage, as some would say, was destined. As a kid, Lee drew a picture over and over again of his ideal woman. Years later, he was set up by his cousin to meet Joan. He didn’t just meet Joan, though. He met the woman from his drawings.

They were married in 1947 until her death in 2017.

The Greatest Comic Writer

Lee is definitely a legend. Marvel Comics stood out from others by aiming stories at teenagers and young adults. Characters, like Spider-Man, were popular on college campuses. Through Lee’s leadership, Marvel Comics sold 35 million comics per month.

Over the years, Lee has been one of the most recognizable names in popular culture. For someone who wanted to write books, we’ll say he created his own universe.
