Meet The Carolina Reaper

The Carolina Reaper is the world’s hottest pepper, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. This is what it looks like:

Wikipedia

It’s red and gnarly and has a small pointed tail. It also packs in nearly 1.5 million Scoville units, meaning it’s roughly 1,000 times hotter than your average chili pepper. Simply put, you can’t eat one of these and not have some problems.

But, because we’re human beings who can’t leave well enough alone, there’s this:

Eating a lot of the Carolina Reaper is clearly going to be impractical for most of us. So they launched a range of Carolina Reaper chips instead and like all good marketing teams, they came up with a sales plan that people can’t resist – bet people that they can’t eat just one Carolina Reaper chip.

Morning TV Takes On The Challenge

This is where our intrepid morning news team takes the mantle. A team of five presenters is brought together to explore the claim that the Carolina Reaper is hot and to mock the efforts to eat “just one chip.”

YouTube

It begins with an explanation that there is a single chip in the wrapper and that everyone will be putting “just one chip” in their mouths as part of their morning’s activity.

Each presenter scoffs down a chip (or in one case, a very small part of one chip) and then sits back to show how it goes.

The Results Are Mixed, But Some Got Hit REALLY Hard

One guy is completely unphased and he wolfed down the whole chip. Another took a tiny nibble of the chip and complains that it’s too hot.

Then there’s the anchorwoman, who doesn’t look too bothered until she leans over and vomits live on air. This sends a co-host into a panic running back and forth and seeking medical attention.

If there’s one thing that we learned from this broadcast on the Carolina Reaper One Chip Challenge it’s don’t try this at home folks. It hurts.
