Reality TV stars are some of the wildest and craziest characters on TV and have provided us with endless hours of entertainment. Sometimes we love ‘em, sometimes we love to hate ‘em, but we certainly can’t live without them. If their shows didn’t exist, then we’d be without some of the best entertainment moments of the past two decades. Take a trip with us to meet some of the most famous reality TV stars and find out where they came from, how they climbed the ladder of fame, and what they’re doing now.
Honey Boo Boo
Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson grew to child stardom on the TLC reality series Toddlers & Tiaras which eventually led to her own spin-off show called Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The series was deemed TV trash and compared to a car crash people just couldn’t look away from.
The series was abruptly canceled and an entire season was left unaired after Honey Boo Boo’s mother was exposed dating a man convicted of aggravated child molestation. The sex offender allegedly molested the family’s eldest daughter. These days Honey Boo Boo is still appearing on reality TV, this time on her mother’s show, Mama June: From Not to Hot on the We TV network.
Hudson may not have won American Idol but she does hold the title of the third greatest Idol contestant in the history of the series. Ranked just below Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Nothing against Fantasia, but the title speaks for itself. MTV called her elimination “the most shocking of all time.”
Hudson stole our hearts with her voice on American Idol and that success jumpstarted her career. She went straight on to play the part of Effie in the 2006 movie Dreamgirls. She has released multiple successful albums and even returned to reality TV as a coach on The Voice US and UK.
Nicole Richie, already well-known for being a wealthy socialite, was on the reality TV show The Simple Life alongside her friend Paris Hilton. The show was insanely popular, because hey, who wouldn’t want to see two socialite divas doing manual labor and feeling the pains of the working-class people.
After The Simple Life ended, Richie went on to be a mentor on the NBC reality show Fashion Star and then in July of 2014 got her own show called Candidly Nicole. The series aired for two seasons before she got the acting role of Portia on the NBC sitcom, Great News. Apart from acting, Richie is also a fashion designer and author.
Chris was a farmer in Iowa prior to his appearance on Season 10 of The Bachelorette in 2014 and made it all the way to third place. He was let go by Andi Dorfman after he confessed that he was falling in love with her.
After that, he was on The Bachelor and proposed to Whitney Bischoff but the two called it quits after being together for six months. Chris also appeared on Dancing with the Stars and Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition. He was arrested in 2017 after fleeing the scene of a fatal traffic accident. He reportedly rear-ended a tractor-trailer, killing the driver. Chris has since deleted all of his social media accounts and hired a legal team.
This Kardashian rose to stardom after her sex tape leaked in February of 2007. Later that same year the family’s reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians began airing on the E! network. Despite the show’s poor reviews and criticism that the family is “famous for being famous,” it is widely considered a guilty pleasure show. It quickly became the network’s cash cow show.
The success of the series has led to multiple spin-off reality shows such as: Kourtney and Kim Take Miami, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, Khloé & Lamar, Kourtney and Khloé Take The Hamptons, Dash Dolls, Rob & Chyna, and Life of Kylie. Now that’s a lot!
Before Lakshmi became known a host of the reality show Top Chef, she was already a famous model, author and actress. She earned a BA in Theatre Arts and moved to Spain to study abroad where she was discovered by a modeling agent. Lakshmi has stated that she was the “first Indian model to have a career in Paris, Milan and New York.”
Lakshmi’s acting career actually started in Italy in 1995. She starred in a number of different series and even made an appearance on Star Trek Enterprise. The model-turned-actress started hosting reality show Top Chef in its second season, replacing Katie Lee Joel, and has been there ever since. That’s a whopping 13 seasons so far!
This girl used the social media platform MySpace to get noticed. She was so popular that MTV gave her a reality bisexual dating show called A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila. The series lasted for two seasons, but sadly she didn’t find love. After that, her career declined and she went on hiatus.
In order to restart her reality star career, she released a sex tape entitled, Tila Tequila: Backdoored and Squirting. She’s gained plenty of criticism for frequently taking to social media to voice her support for Hitler and Nazism. She was recently photographed at an alt-right event giving a Nazi salute. She has also publicly stated that she aspires to be an Asian version of Hitler and that the Earth is flat…
Apart from being born into a rich and already famous family, Jenner gained personal fame for his acting debut on the Fox reality series The Princes of Malibu, starring himself and his brother Brandon Jenner. The series was canceled after airing only two episodes.
Even though Jenner’s first reality show didn’t work out, he wasn’t deterred. He went on to become something of a professional reality TV star. He appeared in 63 episodes of The Hills, Party Monsters: Cabo, Bromance, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, The Playboy Morning Show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians and a talk show called Sex with Brody. That’s a whole lot of reality TV!
Carrie Underwood was the season four winner of the reality show American Idol. Early on in the competition, she was labeled by Simon Cowell to be one of the favorites to win the season. After winning, she took her newfound fame and ran with it.
Underwood quickly reached the top of the country music charts and won three Grammy Awards. She is still singing today and has become one of the most successful artists across all genres. She married retired hockey player Mike Fisher in 2010 and together the couple have a son.
Hasselbeck was largely unknown before her reality show appearance. She worked on the design team for Puma, then at the age of 24 she was a contestant on the second seasons of Survivor, launching her TV career. Just a year after the show she joined the talk show The View.
Hasselbeck co-hosted on the view for 10 straight seasons before finally leaving the show to join Fox & Friends. In 2015, she left the show because she wanted to spend more time with her three children. She also has two published books about gluten-free dieting.
This socialite had a breakthrough with her reality TV show The Simple Life which launched shortly after the release of her sex tape, One Night in Paris. It’s possible that helped the show’s ratings… The show was on the air for five seasons before its eventual cancellation.
She jumped back into reality TV with the show Paris Hilton’s My New BFF, a show where she was essentially looking for someone to be her friend. No matter what anyone says, that’s not sad. Currently, she has been working on her music career and other things rich people do, like shopping and such.
Josh was just one of the many many children on the TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting. All of their names started with the letter “J” so it was especially difficult to keep track of them all. The show ran for an impressive 10 seasons until it was canceled due to Josh’s sexual scandals.
Josh, the eldest child, was accused of sexually molesting five underage girls, including some of his own sisters. As if that wasn’t bad enough, it was discovered that he had been cheating on his wife through the Ashely Madison website, and was accused of sexual assault by a woman he paid to have sex with.
Brooke’s father, Hulk Hogan, used his television special (Inside) Out: Hulk Hogan, Stage Dad mainly as an attempt to promote his daughter’s music album and it eventually spawned the reality TV show Hogan Knows Best. It was canceled after four seasons, but then Brooke got her own reality show.
The show was called Brooke Knows Best. While starring in the reality series she also released a few albums, started a professional wrestling career and started acting in movies and other TV series. Brooke is certainly a jack of all trades!
After a few guest appearances on Laguna Beach with her sister, Conrad landed a permanent gig on the reality series The Hills. Conrad was the highest paid actor on the show, racking in a massive $2.5 million a year! After her success on the show, from 2006 to 2009, she moved on to expand into fashion.
After The Hills she guest starred on a number of other reality TV series, but nothing as long-term. She married musician William Tell in 2014 and together the couple has one child. Today she is still working on her fashion line and just recently released an affordable swimsuit line at Kohl’s.
This playboy bunny shot into reality TV stardom for her role on the series The Girls Next Door along with several of Hugh Hefner’s other then-girlfriends. The series followed the lives of the girls during their time living in the Playboy mansion.
Wilkinson has been doing very well for herself after the series ended. She is currently happily married with two children and even has her own show! That’s right, she went back to reality TV. Her show is called Kendra on Top and it has been running for six seasons!
Musician Bret Michaels may have become famous for his music but he reached TV fame on his reality dating show Rock of Love. In the show, women competed against one another for the chance to go on a date with Michaels.
The show ran for three seasons, but surprisingly none of the relationships with the women he dated ever worked out. After the show ended, the Poison musician won The Celebrity Apprentice 3 and also starred in the reality documentary Bret Michaels: Life as I Know It, a show based on the lives of Michaels and his family. He is still an active member of the band Poison.
“The Situation”, also known by his real name Michael Paul Sorrentino, has made a living off of being a reality TV star. He got his start on Jersey Shore in 2009 and rode the reality money-train through all six seasons until the last episode aired in 2012.
If you’re wondering where The Situation is today, he can be found on reality TV or on a talk show talking about his reality TV career. After his stint on Jersey Shore, he checked himself into rehab for drug addiction. He has also shown up in the news recently for tax fraud. He allegedly owes the US government $8.9 million in taxes. Ouch…
This 98 Degree heartthrob broke into acting with the reality TV series Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The show followed the newly-wed couple, Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson, through their daily lives. The two quickly became household names and pop icons.
Sadly, the couple divorced just one year after the series ended and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for divorce. Nowadays, Lachey is still making music, has appeared in a number of reality TV shows, and in 2011, married beauty queen Vanessa Joy Minnillo.
This reality star, just like her friend Lauren Conrad, got her start with guest appearances on Laguna Beach then later joined the main cast of the reality TV series The Hills. She caused quite a bit of controversy after she underwent 10 cosmetic surgeries in one day. She looked like a completely different person.
Montag and her husband, Spencer Pratt, have competed together in a number of reality game shows together after The Hills ended such as I’m a Celebrity…Get Me out of Here!, Celebrity Wife Swap, Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars 2 and Celebrity Big Brother.
Farrah rose to reality TV fame for being pregnant and a teenager at the same time. Certainly a unique talent! She first appeared on 16 and Pregnant, then moved over to Teen Mom for four seasons. Well, she was fired from Teen Mom for her work in the porn industry. We guess porn is where MTV draws the line.
Prior to her porn career, Abraham underwent extensive plastic surgery and publicized her botched lip job to the world. She also released two studio albums. Both have received overwhelmingly negative reviews and heavily criticized for the EXTENSIVE use of auto-tune. Jezebel has called her music “the most horrible combination of sounds to ever be assembled in the history of audio recording.”
Bruce Jenner was on a number of reality TV shows in the early 2000s, mostly game shows such as The Weakest Link, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and The Apprentice. Then in 2007, the former Olympic gold medal winner hit gold again with his family’s reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
Jenner came out as a trans woman in 2015 and changed names from Bruce to Caitlyn. She starred in her own reality show on the E! network called I Am Cait which ran for two seasons before it was canceled due to low ratings.
If she hadn’t won American Idol who knows where she would be today. She won the first season of the reality show without ever landing in the bottom three. Impressive! Right out of the gate she started dropping hit songs and albums.
Clarkson even broke a record held by The Beatles for a single making the biggest leap to number one on Billboard Hot 100. Since being on Idol, she has released a number of albums and married Brandon Blackstock, Reba McEntire’s stepson. Now that’s a talented family!
Tiffany “New York” Pollard
This “Head Bitch In Charge,” as she so proclaims, was unknown prior to her appearance on the reality dating show Flavor of Love. She earned the title of one of the most controversial contestants on reality TV. She came in second place on the first season of the show and was brought back during the second season only to lose again.
New York went on to star in her own reality show called I Love New York and a number of spin-off shows. After a five year hiatus from the reality TV world, she returned in 2015 appearing on Botched and Candidly Nicole. She was also on Celebrity Big Brother and joining the second season of Famously Single.
Who could forget Audrina Patridge from The Hills? She made her television debut on the show and was a main cast member for all six seasons. Patridge appeared in more episodes of The Hills than any of the other cast members.
Patridge was in the 11th season of Dancing with the Stars with dance partner Tony Dovolani and came in seventh place overall. She also starred in her very own reality show called Audrina but it was canceled after a disappointing first season. Recently, she has filed for divorce from her husband Corey Bohan and filed a restraining order against him.
Kylie was just a kid when she first appeared on the reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The series follows the family’s lives and we got to see Kylie surgically blossom into a voluptuous sex icon throughout the years.
These days Kylie is still going strong in the realm of reality TV and has launched her own clothing line and cosmetic line. She starred in her own reality show on the E! network called Life of Kylie. TV Guide commented that the show “is like its star: searching for purpose, but mostly very, very sad.”
Port joined her partners in crime Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag, and Audrina Patridge as a main cast member on the reality show The Hills for the first four seasons of the show. In 2008 she moved over to another reality series called The City.
Apart from acting, Porter is also a fashion designer and author. In 2008 she became a fashion contributor for Teen Vogue and started her own clothing line called “Whitney Eve.” Porter married Tim Rosenman in 2015 and the couple recently had their first child. Congrats!
This supermodel became America’s First Top Model in season one of Tyra Banks’ reality modeling show. After the major win, Curry started appearing in multiple TV shows and movies. She was also named one of the hottest women on earth by Maxim.
Curry was proposed to by former Brady Bunch star Christopher Knight on the season finale of My Fair Brady, which she co-produced. The couple sadly filed for divorce in 2011 and it was finalized in 2013. Curry’s popularity skyrocketed when she attacked a sexual predator assaulting someone at Comic Con while she was dressed as Catwoman. Now that a superhero!
Stodden got her start in reality TV due mostly to her rather unorthodox marriage. When she was just 16 years old, Stodden married a 51-year-old actor. She debuted in the reality TV world on the show Couples Therapy to deal with marital issues caused because of the age difference between the two.
Stodden later appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and numerous other reality shows. In 2015, she released a solo sex tape and reportedly donated all the profits to charity. She is also a national spokesperson for PETA. It was last reported that she has legally separated from her husband.
Holly Madison is another playboy bunny that found stardom through reality television. Madison was part of the cast of The Girls Next Door along with Hugh Hefner’s other then-girlfriends. After the series ended she jumped around a few different show before finally landing her own.
Madison’s reality TV show was called Holly’s World and it aired for two seasons on the E! network. She also worked as a co-producer on the show. She’s gone on to release a memoir of her life entitled Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny, which topped the best-sellers list.
Fairplay gained notoriety for being a villain (and not playing fair) on Survivor: Pearl Islands in 2003, his first television appearance. Before the show began taping, he arranged for a friend to pretend at some point that Fairplay’s grandmother had died. It was supposed to garner sympathy for him. The friend was eventually invited to the show and told the lie. But audiences were disgusted when they found out it was all a ruse.
Fairplay returned to appear in the 16th season of Survivor and he was the first competitor voted off the island. Since the reality TV drama, he has focused on his professional wrestling career and announced via Twitter that he was separating from his wife, Michelle Deighton.
Kate was just a regular nurse before she became famous for giving birth to a set of twins, then a set of sextuplets. News of the family broke headlines nationwide and peaked the curiosity of the entire countr y— so much so that it landed them their very own reality show called Jon & Kate Plus 8. The show was later called Kate Plus 8 after the couple divorced.
The show’s ratings dwindled down after the couple divorced and Kate has stated that Jon simply became another person overnight and checked out of the family at some point. She has gone on to appear in a number of other reality shows such as Say Yes to the Dress, Dancing with the Stars, Celebrity Wife Swap, and season 14 of The Apprentice. Kate has also written three non-fiction books.
Guiney appeared in the very first season of The Bachelorette and ultimately lost to winner Ryan Sutter. His participation on the show eventually led to him being invited to be a bachelor himself, starring in the fourth season of The Bachelor. In case you were wondering, it looks like finding love on a reality show isn’t the best way to go about it. Guiney has been married three times.
A source close to the show has stated that Guiney holds the record for having sex with the most women on the show, a claim that Guiney himself has denied. Most recently he hosted a real estate makeover show on TLC called Date My House.
“Mama June” Shannon
We first met Mama June on the reality show Toddlers & Tiaras with her daughter Honey Boo Boo and really got to know her in the reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. She was criticized by some of her less than orthodox parenting techniques, such as giving her daughter “go go juice,” a mixture of Red Bull and Mountain Dew.
Recently she starred in her own reality show Mama June: From Not to Hot. The show documented June’s weight loss transformation. She lost an amazing 300 lbs and is looking great! She was fitted for a gastric sleeve and had surgery to remove the excess skin. Prior to surgery she jokingly said, “I’m kind of going to miss my turkey neck.”
Nicole “Snookie” Polizzi
Snookie became a household name for her drunken shenanigans on Jersey Shore. She was a main cast member for all six seasons of the show. By the final two seasons, she was making an estimated $150,000 per episode! In an interview, she admitted that she seriously considered leaving the show after the very first episode.
Since Jersey Shore ended Snookie has taken her reality TV fame and kept running with it. She starred for four seasons on the reality series Snooki and Jwoww along with her former Jersey Shore co-star. She was more recently on The New Celebrity Apprentice.
Staub was an original main cast member on The Real Housewives of New Jersey for the first two seasons then disappeared in the third season. No explanation was ever given for her departure. After her stint on the show, she sold her house and then later filed for bankruptcy.
Staub returned to The Real Housewives of New Jersey for season eight in 2017 as a friend (or as some say, ‘frenemy’) of the housewives. She also announced that she was engaged to Marty Caffrey and the two were caught having sex in the bathroom during the filming of opening celebrations for the new season.
Trishelle Cannatella’s career took off in the early 2000s from her role on The Real World: Las Vegas and she went on to have a robust film and TV career. She hosted numerous shows, including The Surreal Life, Kill Reality, Punk’d and Fear Factor, and even posed nude for Playboy magazine.
Cannatella’s last TV appearance was in 2013 but that doesn’t mean she isn’t still busy busy. After acting and modeling she took on the world of poker. She even finished third in the 2010 WPT Invitational Tournament and won a prize of $20,000. She married pilot John Hensz in 2017.
Before the reality show Duck Dynasty, Robertson was a professional hunter and businessman. He founded a company called Duck Commander after inventing a new duck call. The family’s lives were portrayed on the series for 11 seasons and it was a major success for the A&E network.
Robertson caused a major controversy in 2013 for anti-gay and bigoted statements he made in an interview with GQ magazine. He stated that homosexual behavior is sinful, said men are attracted to vaginas and “whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later.” Ratings declined after the incident. Robertson now has his own show, In the Woods with Phil, on Cameroonian network CRTV, where he can spout his views without what he calls “political correctness.”
Abby Lee Miller
Choreographer and dance instructor Abby Lee Miller rose to fame with the reality series Dance Moms on Lifetime. Everything seemed to be going well for the reality TV star and her dance troupe until she ran into legal issues, specifically committing bankruptcy fraud. She pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to serve one year and a day in federal prison.
Miller quit the show in March of 2017 and her final episode aired in October of the same year. When asked whether she would consider returning to Dance Moms in the future she said, “never say never.” Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens!
Donald Trump was the host of reality TV show The Apprentice for the show’s first 14 seasons. Contestants were judged based on their business skills and competed to win a one-year starting contract to run one of Trump’s many companies.
Trump’s presidential campaign forced NBC to replace the host of the show. The following Celebrity Apprentice was hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger, however, he has since stated that he would not be hosting any further seasons. In November 2016, Trump was elected the 45th President of the United States and in 2017 it was announced that the show was cancelled for good.
Kim was an original housewife on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta. She starred as a main cast member for the first five seasons of the show. After leaving the show in 2012 she was picked up for her own reality TV show called Don’t Be Tardy
Kim has six children and has come under fire for some rather unorthodox parenting techniques. She caused a ruckus recently when she jokingly asked on Twitter who her daughter had to give oral sex to in order to get tickets to a John Legend show. But anyone familiar with the actress knows that’s just her sense of humor. Kim was mostly recently playing a guest role in the ninth season The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Jon rose to fame when his wife gave birth to sextuplets, bringing their number of children to eight. Their reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8 premiered in 2007, but the “Jon” part of the title was dropped in 2009 after the couple filed for divorce.
He was reportedly ordered to pay Kate $22,000 per month in child support. Currently, he has been going through a number of odd jobs such as construction work, waiting tables, bartending, DJing and stripping. Must take a lot of side jobs to bring in enough for that child support.
Reality star Teresa Giudice got her start on The Real Housewives of New Jersey as a main cast member. She has also written a number of New York Times bestseller cookbooks. But despite all that, she may be best known for her financial and legal troubles.
Both she and her husband were sentenced to serve time in prison for a laundry list of crimes, including, but not limited to, conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loan applications, and bankruptcy fraud. Currently, she is out of prison and still a main cast member on The Real Housewives of New Jersey.
Jenelle Evans, like her Teen Mom co-star Farrah Abraham, has also stirred up quite the drama throughout the years. She started on Teen Mom 2 in 2011 and is still going at it. Her legal issues started in 2010 (as far as we can tell) when she and her boyfriend were arrested for breaking and entering and drug possession.
Evans happens to be the proud owner of a vast collection of mug shots for her many many arrests. She has been arrested for domestic abuse, disturbing the peace, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of her probation and non-payment of child support. Despite all the drama and legal issues, Evans is still on Teen Mom 2.
No, he didn’t win the first season of American Idol but he certainly stole the hearts of millions all around the world. Guarini came in second place just after Kelly Clarkson. After his appearance on the reality singing show, he starred in the famously-bad movie From Justin to Kelly. Though, in his defense, he was contractually obligated by American Idol to be in the movie
Guarini has released several music albums since his Idol days and worked at a number of different jobs. He appeared in a number of Broadway shows like American Idiot, Romeo and Juliet and Wicked. He was also a guest host on the TV Guide Network. Most recently, Guarini has starred in a series of Diet Dr. Pepper commercials.
Frankel was a production assistant on Saved by the Bell then jumped into fame on the reality show The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, where she was one of the two finalists. She kept the ball rolling in the reality world when she joined The Real Housewives of New York City in 2008.
Frankel even had a couple of her own talk shows. Since then, she still makes guest appearances on shows but has focused her career on her company, Skinnygirl. She has also co-authored four self-help books, is a PETA advocate, and runs a program for disaster relief.
