This Oscar-Winning Actress Is Being Petitioned To Play Princess Leia

Published

on

Since the death of Carrie Fisher, fans have been wondering about the fate of her iconic character, Princess Leia, who is still alive (and one of the few remaining rebels) as of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Fortunately, one fan has the solution to the problem. They’re just hoping one award-winning actress is up for the part!

One With The Force

A petition to have Meryl Streep play Princess Leia has been making the rounds. It was originally made around the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Created by someone named Chill M, it has over 10,000 signatures so far.

They’ll need 13,000 signatures before they consider sending it to Lucasfilm.

You’re My Only Hope

A lot of people have scoffed at the thought of Leia being replaced. Many Star Wars fans have called it sacrilegious to even entertain the thought of a replacement. If it were to happen, Streep would be the perfect fit.

Streep and Fisher were close friends since 1990’s Postcards from the Edge, which is based on Fisher’s semi-autobiography. In the film, The movie Streep plays Suzanne Vale, who is the fictional version of Fisher. Streep earned her ninth Oscar nomination for her performance. Fisher gained a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Saga Continues

One person is entirely against this idea. Mark Hamill did an interview with Collider where he discussed a possible replacement. “I know the script had been developed enough, so when we lost her they had to go back to square one. She’s irreplaceable as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

Lucasfilm

With Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy stating no CGI or replacement shall be used for Leia, this petition is basically useless. No one knows the fate of Princess Leia going into Episode 9, which drops on December 20, 2019. With filming starting this summer, we may get some hints from the cast and crew.
