Thai Police Officer Subdues Knife Attacker with a Hug

Police officers are often in the news subduing potential attackers through quick-thinking moves, handcuffs, tasers and at times even gun shots. But when a man holding a knife went inside a police station in Bangkok, Thailand, one police officer responded not with violence but with compassion and a hug.

In a CCTV video caught inside the Huay Kwang Police Station in Bangkok, a seemingly distraught man was seen entering the station with a knife on his hand. A police officer, identified as Officer Anirut Malee, emerged from his cubicle and can be seen reasoning with the man.

Officer Malee tried to put the mind of the man at ease by acting calm and undisturbed by the situation, even sitting down on the edge of the table to appear unthreatening.

He can be seen in the video motioning to the man several times to hand over the knife he was holding. The man eventually gave in and surrendered the weapon.

While most police officers would have handcuffed the guy and throw him in jail, Officer Malee approached the man, threw the knife, and gave the distressed man a warm hug. The man, later on, broke down and officer Malee moved him in a nearby chair and calmed him down.

According to Sanook News, a local Thai news organization, Officer Malee learned that the man was a former musician who is currently working as a security guard but had been left unpaid for three days. On top of it all, his guitar has also been stolen. All these unfortunate circumstances caused the man much distress.

“I heard him out and sympathized and said I had a guitar to give him and suggested we go out for a meal together,” Officer Malee shared.

No charges have been filed against the man.
