Animal shelters in Houston have been packed to the brim because of the number of abandoned animals amidst the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. Sadly, these pets would have to be euthanized unless other shelters could take them in. Fortunately, Southwest Airlines stepped up and helped transport 60 pets so they could be relocated to other shelters.
“The devastation of Hurricane Harvey has impacted a number of our communities along the Gulf. Our hearts are with our Customers, Employees, family and friends who have experienced loss and devastation from the storm,” said Southwest Airlines Chief Communications Officer Linda Rutherford in a statement.
The animal rescue flight from Houston to San Diego was carried out by the airline in collaboration with the Helen Woodward Animal Center.
“We’re so happy to partner with the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) to extend hope to Houston by transporting shelter animals to a new home in San Diego while making additional space for family pets whose humans are currently displaced. Our Employees care so deeply for our Customers and all those impacted by Hurricane Harvey, including our sweet little four-legged friends,” Rutherford added.
HWAC President Mike Arms reminded many that animals have also been victimized by the floods but not many people were aware of their condition.
“These are the silent victims,” Arms told the Telegraph. “There are shelters that have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey, without electricity, without supplies.”
One of the animal rescue shelters who warmly welcomed the orphaned animals is the Operations Pets Alive who shared: “We are honored to help save those lives and we are lucky to have incredible friends like Southwest to help make this all possible.”
Apart from partnering with various rescue centers, HWAC is also encouraging the public to adopt a “Harvey Pet” to save the rescued animals.
