Will A Fan-Fueled Petition Remove ‘The Last Jedi’ From Star Wars Canon?

If you’re a Star Wars fan, you likely have some strong opinions on their latest release, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If so, you are not alone. A passionate Star Wars fan created a petition to Disney to remove the film from the official canon. Surprisingly, it received over 100,000 signatures in less than nine months. Here’s why:

A Commonly Held Argument

Henry Walsh posted a petition on Change.org asking Disney to remove Star Wars: The Last Jedi from the official canon. In his petition, Walsh says, “Episode VIII was a travesty. It completely destroyed the legacy of Luke Skywalker and the Jedi. It destroyed the very reasons most of us, as fans, liked Star Wars.”

Though this may seem like a far-fetched request to America’s most powerful entertainment conglomerate, it comes as no surprise. Audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes for the film hovered around 46%, a poor sign for The Last Jedi.

Luke Skywalker In The Last Jedi

The reasons listed in Walsh’s petition were justified by Skywalker’s limited appearances in the film and his disappointing final scene. Fans also criticized his out of character pessimism at the beginning of the film.

Skywalker’s death, in which he dissolves into the Force after a stalemated attack led by Kylo Ren, seemed to fans to be an unjust death for their beloved hero. Many of the comments on the petition claim this final scene was “terribly written” and “a poor send-off” for Skywalker.

Will Disney and Lucasfilms Take Action?

Though Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to comment on the backlash for Episode VIII, Director Rian Johnson told Entertainment Weekly, “I was terrified [of writing the scene]. It was a growing sense of dread when I realized this was going to make sense in that chapter.” He seemed to empathize with fans who were upset but argued that the ending was best for the saga to continue with new characters.

Glitch Up

Johnson stated, “It’s because [the fans] care about these things, and it hurts when you’re expecting something specific and you don’t get it from something that you love… I don’t take it personally if a fan reacts negatively and lashes out on me on Twitter… It’s my job to be there for that.”
