Netflix surprises Gilmore Girls’ fans with a free cup of coffee
Those familiar with Gilmore girls will remember the staccato chat between Lorelai and Rory that often took place in Luke Danes’ small town diner, Luke’s. Netflix decided to make things surprisingly real last week by bringing Luke’s Diner into the neighborhoods and cities across America, where 200 shops set things up for a cup of free hot coffee and a chat for thousands of customers. The move was a publicity gig as the internet-based service renewed the show for several more episodes starting next month. Customers all over the country streamed in unaware of what was going on but soon sat chatting over free cups of coffee with the name Luke’s emblazoned on the sides.
Netflix even went an extra step to make things even better as they had some coffee drinkers and vendors dress up as Luke Danes himself, complete with a baseball hat and a scruffy plaid shirt. As soon as the events started across the country, customers uploaded hundreds upon hundreds of photos to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with their very own piece of Gilmore Girls extravaganza. Some mother-daughter matchups even posed for the camera while channeling their inner Lorelai and Rory. The online production giant had some Gilmore Girls memorabilia paraded outside some of the shops the action took place. Some coffee cups also had quotes from the show embedded on the outside.
Many residents of California were not so thrilled to wake up to huge queues in their local coffee shops but that soon turned into a pleasant surprise when they learned that the man behind the counter was none other than actor Scott Patterson, who played Luke Danes in the heavily popular show. After serving happy fans for some time, Patterson stepped away from the counter, after which he gave hugs and even had some moments to grab photos with the crowd before ducking back behind the counter and getting to work.
When Netflix announced the revival of the show, the network promised that there will be four episodes produced, and that each will be a maximum of 90 minutes long. The plan is to have the entire crew back together in time for production. This means that if you did not get a moment to pop in to your local coffee shop , then all you have to do is wait till 25th of next month to tune in for the first episode in the renewal.
Netflix chose October 5 for the free cup of coffee event because October 5,2000 was when the show first hit the TV screens of American audiences.
