‘Modern Family’ Co-Creator Reveals A ‘Significant Character’ Will Die In Season 10

Modern Family is known for its humor and lightheartedness, but it looks like season 10 will be a much heavier one. And fans may not be ready for it.

Tackling The Grim Reaper

The show’s co-creator Christopher Lloyd admitted a shocking turn of events. The extended family will lose a “significant character” in the upcoming season. “We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject,” Lloyd said. “But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”

Variety

This TV family has seen death before (Phil Dunphy’s mother passed away in season four). However, she was an offscreen character, so it wasn’t as impactful. Lloyd revealed that the loss of this character “will be a moving event—and an event that has repercussions across several episodes.”

Keeping Things Quiet

Though the news of this upcoming death somewhat rattled the TV world, Lloyd is not revealing which character will go this season. “There is a significant change in the dynamics of the family that people maybe thought was going to happen at some point down the line that is happening sooner than expected,” Lloyd stated. That announcement left fans in confusion, speculating whose character was toast.

Entertainment Weekly

Of course, Lloyd’s news not only shocked fans but, seemingly, some of the cast as well! Nathan Gould (who plays Luke Dunphy) was in a complete panic. “When I heard [a character would die], I called my agents, and I was like, ‘It’s me! Guaranteed. 100 percent it’s me,'” he revealed. “‘It’s a plot. They’ve been trying to kill me for years, [and] now’s their chance. They hate me.’ I was, like, crying.” Other cast members made a joke out of the news. Sarah Hyland (Haley Dunphy) tweeted, “Is this how actors on Game of Thrones & The Walking Dead feel?!?!” Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett) joked on Twitter, “Significant Character is a GREAT drag name.”

The Beginning Of The End?

With the news of a major character dying, fans and critics alike are wondering if the end is near for the show. There were reports that the tenth season might be the last. However, there were also rumors that there might be a season 11, albeit a shorter one to wrap things up.

Country Living

Lloyd is optimistic that the show will continue its fun and laughter after this season. “There’s goodwill on both sides to make it happen, but there’s also complicated matters that have to get worked through…” he shared in an interview. He also added, “From our standpoint creatively we’ve gotten excited writing this season and changing the lives of the characters—some in a significant way—and it’s made us think, ‘Wow, there’s a lot to explore in the lives of these characters.”
