How Meghan Markle Prepared For Her First Royal Tea Party

Published

on

Meghan Markle is officially the Duchess of Sussex, having officially tied the knot with Prince Harry. However, before she made it down the aisle, she had to get the sign-off from one very important person: the Queen of England herself! Yes, Meghan had to meet Queen Elizabeth for tea, but first, she had some serious preparing to do!

An Inevitable Situation

As Meghan’s relationship with Prince Harry progressed, Meghan knew that she would eventually have to get to know the Queen of England. After all, Queen Elizabeth isn’t just a monarch. She’s also Harry’s beloved grandmother. So, it made sense that the Queen would want to meet her. What the former actress didn’t know was just how many rules of ‘tea etiquette’ she would have to learn!

Finding An Expert

Before her official tea time with Queen Elizabeth, Meghan made the decision to learn the rules of tea from a qualified pro. She made reservations at the Rose Tree Cottage in California to learn proper protocol. Meghan met with the owner, Edmund Fry, who went through a whopping 25 rules with her…

Proper Tea Etiquette

Town and Country

Edmund revealed some major tea rules that commoners may not know. “Never turn the cup over or the plate over to see where it’s made,” he shared. Another interesting rule for Meghan’s tea time with the queen— her napkin must match her clothes! There has to be white napkins for lighter clothing and black ones for darker clothing. Interesting… but, oh, there’s more!

Other Strange Tea Rules

Vanity Fair

Edmund shared even more weird rules of taking tea with the Queen: “The spoon has to be left at 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock,” Fry said. “The handle should always be at 3 o’clock.” Also, tea events also typically have light refreshments like finger sandwiches and scones. When eating scones, first you are to cut them across and the jam should go on first then clotted cream. Meghan apparently was a quick study, but did she really succeed in impressing the queen?

Meeting The Queen

Vanity Fair

Meghan and Prince Harry met with Queen Elizabeth for tea before their engagement. During that time, both Meghan and the Queen got to know each other better. Meghan left a great impression on everyone, even the Queen’s corgis who, Prince Harry hilariously admitted, did nothing but bark at him!
