A hugely influential artist known for his lyrical and poetic music, Cohen composed a number of songs including “Hallelujah.” He had just released his 14th studio album titled “You Want It Darker.” Cohen’s son, Adam Cohen said that his father passed away in the knowledge that he had accomplished what he felt was among his greatest records.

Cohen’s musical career spanned nearly half a century. His songs addressed despair and exaltation, love and faith, war and politics as well as solitude and connection. His sophisticated, superbly succinct lyrics were admired singers from all over the world.

More than 2000 recordings of his songs have been made to date, most notably “Hallelujah.” “Hallelujah,” which took Mr. Cohen 5 years to compose, has appeared in a number of TV shows and movies across the globe. Aside from his successful singing career, Leonard Cohen also wrote a number of novels and numerous books of poems. Most of his poems and novels feel like his lyrics.

Earlier this year, the Hallelujah star foretold that his death was near in a heartbreaking last love letter to his dying ex-lover Marianne Ihlen. In the letter to his long-term friend whom he met in Greece in the 60s when both were in their early 20s, he mentioned his deteriorating health.

Cohen felt compelled to write to Ms. Ihlen who was suffering from leukemia after learning from a friend that she had only a few days to live. Leonard Cohen and Marianne Ihlen had lived together in the 1960s soon after the collapse of Ihlen’s first marriage.

Robery Kory, Cohen’s manager, said the artist’s music would bring healing and inspiration for generations to come. Musicians and song-writers too were mourning the death, including Gary Shteyngart and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Bic Runga, a New Zealand based artist who opened for Cohen during the 2010 tour, posted a photo of her meeting Mr. Cohen.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to twitter on Friday to mourn the death of the 82-year-old singer and songwriter, saying the world has lost a hero, and the Canada has lost a treasure. Cohen’s memorial will be held in L.A although the date is yet to be made public, according to the singer’s official Facebook page.
