‘Leave-Me-Alone Sweater’ Lets Introverts Zip the World Away

Ruth Grace Wong’s “Leave Me Alone” sweater is probably the dream go-to-outfit of introverts and sociophobes because it provides the wearer an option to be completely unseen by the public whenever and wherever he wants simply by zipping the neckline way past the head.

While the design concept of the sweater aptly fit the needs of introverts and sociophobes who value their privacy, amateur designer Wong wrote on her Medium page that she was inspired to create the outfit primarily because she was cold and she wanted to make her “own wearable version” of Compubody Sock, which was shared by her co-worker.

The Leave Me Alone sweater is not exclusive for those who want their head covered since it can be worn in many ways including the “cowl-neck” look, off-the-shoulder style, and the infamous “Leave Me Alone” mode.

According to Wong, the Leave Me Alone style is not necessarily for long-term, regular use considering that the wearer isn’t able to see anything once the neckline is zipped shut. However, she has a practical advice for those who want this to be their default look. “The leave me alone mode is more of a statement than a functional piece of clothing – I can’t see anything through my sweater. If you find yourself using the leave me alone mode a lot, you could add eye holes,” said Wong on her Instructables page.

Wong, who described herself as a “Pinterest engineer by day, maker by night”, said that she has “always admired people who could make their own clothes,” which is why she had been taking sewing lesson with her cousin and watching sewing instructional videos on YouTube. It was actually a turtleneck sweater tutorial on YouTube that helped her create her ingenious sweater.

Because of the warm support to her design, Wong’s sweater is now available at Betabrand and had been getting rave reviews from customers who already bought the item.
