Rapper Kendrick Lamar, along with his record label Top Dawg Entertainment, bought out three movie theatres so kids living in the housing projects of Los Angels could see Black Panther for free. Some critics are saying the blockbuster, which shattered box office records bringing in $235 million domestically, is the greatest superhero movie of all time.

Giving Back

On February 17, Lamar and Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony Tiffith bought out five shows in three theaters – the equivalent of nearly 1,000 theater seats – for kids living in the Watts housing project. Kids living in the Nickerson Gardens, Jordan Downs, and Imperial Courts Projects also gained entry to the movie screening at the offices of their respective housing developments.

Other stars such as Serena Williams, T.I., Octavia Spencer, Lil Yachty and Offset have collectively sent hundreds of children to see the movie, which is being praised for its positive representation of African culture and heritage. These celebrities’ efforts are a result of the hashtag #BlackPantherChallenge, a movement encouraging people to raise money or buy tickets for kids to see the film.

The film is near and dear to Lamar’s heart, as he and Tiffith produced and curated the movie’s critically-acclaimed soundtrack.

They also felt it was important for younger people from their community to see a superhero movie featuring black characters, as Lamar and Tiffith are both originally from Compton, Los Angeles.
