Kate Beckinsale is Moving On From ‘Underworld’

While landing a part in a massive film franchise is what most actors dream of, it can bore you after a while. The money may be fantastic but it can keep you from doing other things. One actress has decided to walk away from an acclaimed role for good.

Out In Five

Kate Beckinsale spoke to Variety about her new film Farming when Underworld came up. Her last appearance in this action horror franchise was in 2016’s Underworld: Blood Wars. When asked if she will ever return to portray Selene again, Beckinsale gave a very blunt response.

Sony Pictures

“I wouldn’t return. I’ve done plenty of those,” she said.

Action Hero Goddess

With 2003’s Underworld, Beckinsale was established in the action film genre. She’s the only character to actually appear in all five Underworld live action films. Her work in the film landed her in other action flicks such as Whiteout and the 2012 Total Recall reboot.

Sony Pictures

Beckinsale didn’t really see herself being a part of a franchise for so long. “I never really planned on doing four movies playing the same character. And it’s an amazing privilege because there’s not that many girls that get the opportunity to be in a long-running franchise, especially an original story,” she told Collider back in 2016.

A Possible Swerve?

Beckinsale’s decision to exit Underworld comes a year after plans for a sixth film was announced. One reason for her possible departure might involve Underworld creator Len Wiseman. The two met on the set of the 2003 film and got married in 2004. During promotional work for Underworld: Blood Wars, Wiseman filed for divorce.

Sony Pictures

While personal problems might get in the way, Beckinsale could simply be fooling everyone about leaving. In the same Collider interview, she gives some insight on if she’ll return. “I’ve always said “Not” but I think I’ve cried wolf a few too many times to properly answer that question,” she said.
