Karl Urban’s Surprising Reaction To Quentin Tarantino’s R-Rated ‘Star Trek’ Film

Last year, Quentin Tarantino shocked many when he said he was producing a Star Trek film. If that wasn’t enough, he was planning on making it an R-rated flick. One star from the current Star Trek films threw their two cents in the conversation.

Banana Bonanza

Karl Urban, who plays Leonard McCoy, discussed when he first heard about Tarantino’s involvement at Trekonderoga. “Quentin Tarantino went in to [producer] J.J. [Abrams]’s offices and pitched him an idea for a Star Trek movie. I know a little bit about what that is, and it’s bananas,” he said.

Urban also stated that he’d love to work with the acclaimed producer. “It would be really rad to get to make a film with him. That would be a dream come true, he is definitely an auteur. Whether you like his films or not, he is a good filmmaker. And he makes interesting stuff. So, to me, that is when you get the best results,” he told the crowd.

Nearly Out Of ‘Beyond’?

Urban’s portrayal of McCoy in 2009’s Star Trek was the standout performance for many critics. When it came to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, he wasn’t so sure if he was coming back.

“I was a little disappointed with the lack of development with McCoy in [Star Trek Into Darkness]. So it was that. Even though I had an amazing experience working with J.J. [Abrams] and the cast, at the end of the day I didn’t have much to do,” he stated at Star Trek Las Vegas. He nearly signed on with another film, which would’ve shot right around the time as Beyond.

A Hopeful Outlook

When it comes to Star Trek 4, things are a bit dicey. Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth walked away from the film due to being asked to take pay cuts.

Urban feels everything will be back to normal, though. “Hopefully, we get back for another movie, or two of them. We are just sort of waiting on negotiations. I’m confident we will,” he also said at Trekonderoga.
