Is Karl Urban Going To Be The (New) Batman?

Published

on

The drama in the DC Extended Universe seems neverending. Ever since Ben Affleck hinted that he’s ready to back out of playing the Caped Crusader, DC has reportedly been quietly on the hunt for a new Dark Knight. One name keeps coming up in fan circles: Karl Urban.

Who Is Karl Urban?

Urban was born in Wellington, New Zealand where he was exposed to the film industry at an early age. He was eight years old during his first acting performance on the New Zealand television series Pioneer Woman.

The actor made recurring appearances on the syndicated US/NZ television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and the spinoff Xena: Warrior Princess where he portrayed Cupid and Julius Ceasar. He can also be seen as the blonde-haired Éomer from the second and third installments of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

No Stranger To Comic Book Cinema

Karl Urban made his comic book film debut as CIA agent William Cooper in Red, adapted from the graphic novel of the same name and starring Bruce Willis. Urban most recently made his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Asgardian villain Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok. He’s appeared in other box office franchises as well, most notably as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the Star Trek films by J.J. Abrams.

Some DC fans apparently think Urban has the chops to fill Batman’s boots, and have campaigned for him to take on the role. Urban himself has apparently been unaware of this campaign but expressed that he was flattered in a recent interview: “Wow. I don’t know,” he said. “I haven’t really contemplated that. Usually the way the process works for me is I get sent projects, sent scripts and I read them, meet with the filmmakers and really on that basis choose to get involved. As far as Batman goes, I guess my favorite Batman movie was The Dark Knight. Chris Nolan is just an extraordinary director and I thought Christian Bale was a fantastic Batman and obviously with such talent like Heath Ledger that was the perfect comic book movie right there… So, I don’t know, I’m open to any and all opportunities.”

The Perfect Jaw For Justice

Looking back at Karl Urban’s filmography will reveal a slight glimpse at what is in store if he became the new Batman. In 2012, Urban was selected to star as futuristic law enforcement officer Judge Dredd in Dredd. The signature scowl of the character is enough to make any comic book fan geek out over the casting decision.

Though the future of Batman‘s character and presence in the DC film universe are uncertain, DC will likely be open to anything as it tries to match what Marvel has been building for the last decade.
