John Goodman Defends Roseanne Barr, Shares Thoughts On Sitcom’s Cancellation

Months after a racially-charged tweet led to the cancellation of ABC’s Roseanne reboot, many of the show’s cast members are still sifting through the emotional wreckage. While some have chosen to speak up about Roseanne Barr’s controversial comments, her on-screen husband John Goodman has remained tight-lipped on the matter—that is, until now.

The Words Of A Fallen Star

“I was brokenhearted, but I thought, ‘OK, it’s just show business, I’m going to let it go,'” recalled the actor, who was left blindsided by the news that the hit series was coming to an end.

“But I went through a period, about a month, where I was very depressed,” he candidly revealed. “I’m a depressive anyway, so any excuse that I can get to lower myself, I will. But [the show’s cancellation] had a great deal to do with it, more than I wanted to admit.”

Goodman Shocks Fans, Backs Barr

While he acknowledged that he and Barr were not particularly close outside of work, Goodman had one definitive thing to say about his co-star’s character: “I know, I know, for a fact that she’s not a racist.”

The actor’s defense of her racial attitudes served as quite the contrast to some of Barr’s other friends and collaborators, many of whom were quick to condemn the hateful sentiment expressed in her tweet.

The Incident’s Aftermath

While the TV star had little else to say about his co-star’s socio-political leanings, he did reveal what steps he took upon learning that Barr had approved of a spin-off without her in it.

“She had to sign a paper saying that she relinquished all her rights to the show so that we could go on,” he explained. “I sent her an email and thanked her for that. I did not hear anything back, but she was going through hell at the time. And she’s still going through hell.”
