India Breaks World Record by Planting 66 Million Trees in 12 Hours
The central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has set a new Guinness World Record after planting 66 million tree saplings along the Narmada river in only 12 hours.
Utter Pradesh, which previously held the record, planted 50 million saplings in 2016 in a 24 hour span. Representatives from the Guinness World Records were present during the event to monitor the mass planting. The group is set to officially confirm the record-breaking efforts in the next couple of weeks.
According to a report by the Independent, 1.5 million volunteers, including children and the elderly, planted the trees tirelessly from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM.
The chief minister of state, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, took to Twitter to show his pride. “I am extremely proud to happily share that the people of Madhya Pradesh successfully planted 6.63 Crore saplings today.”
With this initiative, India is making big leaps to achieve its pledge to expand its forests to five million hectares before 2030, under the Paris Agreement.
Chief Minister Chouhan, in a statement, also shared his gratitude to everyone who participated in the mass planting even. “I am greatly indebted to all who are planting trees today,” he said. “We will be contributing significantly in saving nature. By participating in plantation, people are contributing their bit to climate change initiatives and saving the environment. The world talks of global warming & climate change but Madhya Pradesh has taken a concrete step to deal with it.”
After the United States of America withdraw from the Paris Agreement, India, through its Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reaffirmed its commitment to the agreement, saying “The protection of the environment and the mother planet is an article of faith.”
