The Greatest British Actor Of All Time Has Been Decided, And It’ll Make You Weepy

Published

on

Quick, who is the greatest English actor of all time? Laurence Olivier? Anthony Hopkins? Alec Guinness? The community over at Ranker has decided, and the result shouldn’t surprise anyone.

A Signature Voice

Of course, it’s Alan Rickman, whose thick, iconic voice made us quiver with fear as the menacing Professor Snape in Harry Potter. He kept us on the edge of our seats as the despicable mastermind Hans Gruber in Die Hard. And he frustrated us beyond belief by daring to cheat on Emma Thompson in Love Actually. It doesn’t stop there.

IMDB

Rickman was an iconic actor, yet could effortlessly blend into a variety of genres and settings. He was equally at home in upper-class period dramas like Sense and Sensibility, or in the forests of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. And there’s never been a better voice for a caterpillar than his in Alice in Wonderland. His contribution to the acting craft is unparalleled. When he passed away in 2016, people all over the world knew what they had lost.

Lost Too Early

At just 69, Rickman lost his battle with cancer, which had snuck up on him with a severity he did not realize until it was too late. Following his death, his fellow actors expressed their heartbreak, showered him with praise.

IMDB

Ian McKellen wrote a touching memorial to Rickman in which he said, “There is so much that is matchless to remember about Alan Rickman. His career was at the highest level.” Where do other iconic British actors like McKellen come in on the list?

Capturing Magic On Screen

Gary Oldman, who played Snape’s rival Sirius Black in the Harry Potter films comes in at second place. The rest of the actors are all historical and exemplary in their own right, from Daniel Day-Lewis to Lawrence Olivier. But amidst the company of such high-caliber Academy Award-winning actors, one thing is clear for the man above them all.

IMDB

Rickman is a legend.
