How The Fans Said Goodbye To Carl On ‘The Walking Dead’

Published

on

On the ninth episode of the eighth season of AMC’s The Walking Dead, fans and cast members said goodbye to Carl Grimes, played by actor Chandler Riggs. Carl’s been on the series since the very first episode, and fans were in shock when he was killed off, especially since he is still alive in the comic book series. Fans and fellow cast members alike were sad to see him go, and the way he died leaves zero possibility of him coming back.

A Shocking Death On A Show Known For Them

In the episode titled “The King, The Widow and Rick,” Carl ran into a man named Saddiq while foraging in the woods. Carl wanted to help him and bring him back to Rick’s group, but Rick is at the point in the series where he doesn’t trust anyone anymore. Carl, on the other hand, still believes in a future after all the fighting, after all the zombies, and he wants to welcome Saddiq into their tribe.

When out in the woods, Carl and Saddiq encounter zombies and, while fighting them, Carl is bitten on the torso. That’s a death sentence in this post-apocalyptic world. He doesn’t tell anyone he’s bit until the members of his group, including Saddiq, are safely hidden away from The Saviors. By that time, the infection has spread through his body and he’s run out of time.

At the end of his life, he shoots himself in the head while Rick and Michonne listen outside.

Saying Goodbye

While it’s likely the other members of The Walking Dead cast will be seeing Chandler Riggs again, they all took time out to say goodbye and pay tribute to Carl. Andrew Lincoln (Rick) serenaded Chandler in a Twitter post.

The tune will surely stick in your head when you listen to it and the sentiment is both funny and sad at the same time.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan) also took to Instagram to say goodbye and to let Chandler know how sad he was they weren’t able to develop their relationship as outlined in the comics. Norman Reedus (Daryl) shared a similar sentiment.

Mixed Response From Fans

There were mixed emotions among fans about the death of Carl, mostly due to the fact he’s still alive in the comics. Some fans didn’t care for Carl’s character in the first place, but most fans were sad to see him go. Here’s some of what they had to say during the last episode:

AMC

No matter how you felt about Carl Grimes, you have to admit an eight-year stint on a successful show like The Walking Dead isn’t too shabby. We’ll miss you, Carl!
