This Floating Nation Is Coming In 2020… But You Won’t Believe How Much It Costs
It’s like the stuff of science fiction: a group of people, fed up with politics and the state of the world, seek greener, uncharted pastures at any cost. But this isn’t science fiction — in fact, this new nation could be part of our world in a few years!
The Seasteading Institute
In 2011, Joe Quirk visited the Burning Man festival and was inspired. He’s since created the Seasteading Institute — the group behind the first autonomous, man-made nation, which will float in the sea.
What Is A Floating Nation?
Just as the name suggests, the Seasteading Institute’s “floating nation” is a man-made island, floating in international waters. The Institute plans to populate this island with like-minded individuals who want to try a new way of life — essentially, creating their very own country!
Sustainable Building Plans
The first 12 buildings, set for construction in 2019, will be totally sustainable; the plans include using green roofs covered in plant life, bamboo and coconut fiber walls, and recycled metal and plastic throughout.
In fact, Quirk’s team has two main goals for his new nation: that it benefits the economies of neighboring countries, and that it is environmentally friendly.
Interest From Abroad
The Seasteading Institute has already drawn interest from French Polynesia, which is currently creating a special “government-free” zone for Quirk and his team to test their experiment.
Who’s Funding This?
And who, you wonder, is footing the bill for this big endeavor? None other than PayPal founder Peter Thiel — and it’s a good thing, because the Seasteading Institute needs a lot of cash…
How Much Will It Cost?
How much money will the Institute need? Joe Quirk’s floating city is expected to cost around $167 million — and he’s just getting started!
Big Plans For A Floating Future
The Seasteading Institute views their new project as a revolution. In fact, they hope to have thousands of these floating cities placed around the globe by 2050!
A New Approach To Government
Above all, the Institute’s goal is to give people a chance to choose how they live. Quirk says he wants to “give people the freedom to choose the government they want instead of being stuck with the government they get.”
Would You Live Here?
Would you ever move to a man-made city floating on the sea? In just a few years’ time, you may have that unique opportunity.
