Family Rejoices as They Welcome First Baby Girl in 137 Years

While most pregnant couples wouldn’t mind having a baby girl or boy for as long as he or she is healthy, giving birth to a daughter means the world to the Settle family in South Carolina because no girl had been born to the family for 137 years.

Fortunately, more than a century of waiting is finally over as Will Settle’s wife, Kelen, finally gave birth to a daughter early this month.

“Everybody thought she would be a boy, so it’s a good surprise,” said Kelen in an interview with “ABC World News Tonight”.

Will recalled that it was a celebration when they initially found out about the gender of the baby. Kelen arranged for a ‘gender reveal’ event, which made everyone thrilled.

“Every fiber of my being told me that I was gonna be having a baby boy and never in a million years thought I would be a father or a daughter,” recalled Will.

“That was a very shocking experience for me. I just assumed I was going to have another boy… I was shocked. We had the whole family there. My mother just went nuts. My mom always wanted a daughter. She was ecstatic. She could not believe it,” he added.

The precious baby girl is named Carter Louise. While Louise is a pretty common name for a girl, Carter is quite unusual and strong for a girl.

“She’s going to have to be strong with all the men she’ll deal with in the Settle family,” Will shared as to their reason for choosing the name.

Will and Kelen’s family and friends are also elated to hear the amazing news. In fact, Will’s coworkers are so happy for him that they commissioned for a huge pink billboard featuring Carter’s baby picture and full name to be set up along the side of a South Carolina highway.

When Will first saw the billboard, he shared that it was “an ‘Oh my God’ moment.”
