What’s Up With All These Fake Facts About K-Pop Idols?

Published

on

There has been a recent trend amongst supposed K-Pop “fact” accounts where these users generate fake facts about some of the genre’s heavyweights. Some of these facts are so bizzare, it’s obvious they’re not real. So what is this all about, and why do users do it?

How They Do It

“Taehung from BTS’ favorite snack is styrofoam.” is the type of ‘fact’ you might seen thrown around by one of the many K Pop-related social media accounts that post numerous statements of that type. There is often not truth to these statements whatsover, but many of such accounts are going viral among K-Pop fans.

Stars And Stripes

These accounts simply post what seem to be the most absurd ‘facts’ they can think of, often with low-quality images of K-Pop stars. In return, the accounts accumulate large followings. In fact, many of the ‘facts’ posted come from the followers themselves via direct message or other forms of communication with the account admins.

Why They Do it

When MTV News asked what the motivation behind these accounts is, the replies given all seemed to suggest that they simply found the concept of the posts to be funny. To them, reall fans would know that the statements held no truth, and that was part of the joke.

K Music

The ‘facts’ themselves are even created in such a way that is suppose to make them particularly humorous when associated with certain stars.

Why It Can Be Problematic

Despite the humerous intentions, some users are not aware that these so called ‘facts’ are actually fake. This has led to confusion about what is true and not true, and has also led to online anger against the account owners.

Regardless of how you feel about K-Pop, let alone fake K-Pop ‘facts,’ these accounts certainly offer an interesting perspective into the world of a viral music genre.
