Published

The 89th Annual Academy Awards is around the corner. This Sunday February 26, the movie industry will be acknowledged for their contribution to our entertainment. The academy does this every year and apart from the unforeseen, there are things that we can definitely expect this year:

Airing Time

The award show will be held at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Los Angeles, California. It will start at 8:30 p.m. EST sharp and has been scheduled to run for three hours. However, as witnessed from previous years, the show never runs just three hours; it normally extends by 30 to 45 minutes. This is because the schedule has it that the 24 major categories are aired (this is more than what any other awards show airs).

Red Carpet Fashion

The movie stars will dazzle the red carpet segment with different fashion trends. As has been tradition, the pop industry feeds off the red carpet- especially when it comes to who wears what. Channels such as E! Entertainment will cover the entire red carpet (after they have aired the entire count down). The fashion will be analyzed on later programs. Other channels such as ABC also cover the red carpet.

The Host

This year’s host is ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel is an interesting choice as he is already familiar and friendly with the big stars; as his annual skits on his shows after the Academy Awards. He is also not a mainstream actor therefore gets away with the perfect balance of being close but not too close to the main story of the night. He is an entertaining guy and we should expect a good time through the show.

Awards

There are films that are without a doubt expected to bag awards this year. La La Land for example is most likely to bag the Best Picture award. This movie might present Emma Stone with the Best Actress award, though Natalie Portman may lurk close by.

A movie that might knock La La Land out could be the ‘Moonlight’. This is because of the thought and story line behind it. The movie is about a gay black man who has difficulties growing up in society. However, we should not hold our breath on this one. It might produce also the best supporting actor – Mahershala Ali. The award for Best Supporting Actress is most likely to be bagged by Viola Davis in ‘Fences’.

There is so much to expect from one of the most viewed events on TV. As we plan for these Oscar parties, let us await the antics that may accompany the show, seeing as the environment is still very political.
