Ellen Pompeo Leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Following Season 16?

Published

on

Since 2005, Ellen Pompeo has been a pillar in the Grey’s Anatomy universe. The role launched the actress into superstardom in the TV world. Unfortunately, her time with the Emmy winning show might be up soon.

Saying Goodbye?

The actress recently had a cover story with Entertainment Weekly about the series. During the interview, she revealed plans to possibly leave the show in 2020.

ABC

“I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about my future on the show. That’s something that Shonda Rhimes and I will do together,” she said. Late last year, the actress signed a contract that will last until the conclusion of season 16. This contract, which is valued at $20 million a year, is the biggest contract for any drama actress on TV. Broken down, that contract equals to $575,000 an episode.

Family Comes First

One major reason for her possible leave involves her three children. “My children are getting older so I want to be more available to them now. I can’t be an absentee mom if they’re teenagers, I have to be around to whip their butts. So it’s definitely time for change in my life,” she also stated in the interview.

Her first daughter Stella was born in 2009. This was followed by second daughter Sienna (2014) and son Eli Christopher (2016).

Leaving Her Second Family

If Pompeo does leave, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens, Jr. will be the remaining members of the original cast. Seeing how she plays the title character, things may get a bit awkward following her exit.

ABC

Her portrayal of Dr. Meredith Grey has earned her three People’s Choice Awards. She’s currently nominated for two People’s Choice Awards for Female TV Star and Drama TV Star of 2018.
