Dying Child with Rhabdomyosarcoma Wakes Up to Say ‘I Love You Mommy’
The love of a mother and a child – a story we often hear – but none may seem to be as heart touching as the story of Ruth and Nolan Scully, a child who is suffering from Rhabdomyosarcoma.
Nolan Scully is a very positive young man. He was diagnosed with a very rare type of cancer – Rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue cancer that has been living inside the four-year-old’s body since he was three. Despite having problems, the boy was never seen sulking or seeing things negatively. On the other hand, he even inspires people because he is always positive and tries to make the best out of every situation.
Sadly on the 4th of February of this year, Nolan lost his battle. On February 1st, the entire team of doctors attending to Nolan’s care along with Ruth, her mother, had a meeting. The meeting was more than the ordinary. As Ruth recalls “I saw the pure pain in her eyes. ,” as told by Nolan’s Oncologist. The test results that came back were not good.
Ruth writes in her post on Facebook “large tumors (that) grew compressing his bronchial tubes and heart within four weeks of his open heart surgery. The Mestatic Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma was spreading like wildfire”.
Despite the tragic events, Nolan was still very positive. He had no fear of death and in fact he was willing to wait for his mom in heaven. Her mother recalls one of the conversations that they had after the doctors told her that there was nothing more they could do for Nolan.
Ruth asked Nolan, “What is mommy’s job?” Nolan replied with a big grin on his face “to keep me safe”. Then Ruth began to tell Nolan “Honey, I can’t do that anymore here. The only way I can keep you safe is in Heaven” Nolan replied “So, I’ll just go to heaven and play until you get there! You’ll come right?”
A couple of nights have passed and Ruth asked Nolan if she could go take a shower. Ruth was not allowed to leave Nolan’s side but Nolan allowed Ruth to go. Just after Ruth got into the shower, Nolan fell into a deep coma. When Ruth came out she saw that the entire team was surrounding Nolan, and they informed her that Nolan was in a coma.
Ruth rushed to see Nolan and she took him into her arms. Miraculously Nolan took a breath, looked at her mother with a big smile on his face and said, “I love you mommy”. A few minutes later Nolan left his body while his mom was singing “You Are My Sunshine” into his ears.
