You’ve Probably Never Heard Of Donald Glover’s First Film

These days, Donald Glover is a household name. Equally talented as an actor, comedian, writer, director, rapper, and producer— the man is the total package. He has won Emmys, Golden Globes, and a Grammy. Glover is a megastar, but it hasn’t always been that way.

Humble Beginnings

Glover first started to get recognition as a member of Derrick Comedy, an Internet sketch comedy group. He was then hired as a writer for the NBC television show 30 Rock in 2006. In 2009 he made his big-screen debut with Mystery Team. It also features pre-fame Aubrey Plaza and Ellie Kemper.

The film was made by the Derrick Comedy group. It’s an indie film that tells the story of three naive high school seniors who have been solving crimes together since childhood. No longer satisfied with missing cats and mysteries of that nature, the trio takes on a double homicide case and gets in over their heads.

Lukewarm Reception

Mystery Team premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and had a short run in select theaters. It grossed just under $90,000 in the U.S. and currently holds a 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While it’s not the most successful film ever made, Mystery Team could be worth watching for fans of Donald Glover. It’s a charming dark comedy featuring a babyfaced Glover. The film has the potential to become a cult-classic.

Since Mystery Team, Glover has gone on to conquer the worlds of film, television, and music. He’s been in Spider-Man: HomecomingSolo: A Star Wars Story, and is the voice of Simba in the upcoming Lion King film. He writes, directs, and stars in Atlanta, and earned mainstream fame as Troy Barnes on NBC’s Community.

Ambrosia For Heads

Glover has earned several Grammy nominations as Childish Gambino and even won one for his 2018 album Redbone. With Glover finding success at every turn, it’s unlikely Mystery Team 2 will ever see the light of day.
