How Donald Glover Rose to Music and Comedy Fame

Published

on

Donald Glover, Atlanta-born musician, writer, producer, and comedian, has soared to A-list fame in 2018. But how did he rise to fame so quickly, in not only music but in television and entertainment all at once? Keep reading to find out where this superstar started his career, and what makes him an anomaly among Hollywood stars.

Early Life And The First Step To Fame

Donald Glover was raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia, to a babysitting mother and postal serviceman father. Throughout his childhood, he was enamored with comedy T.V. and was even named “Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons” in high school. Glover went on to study dramatic writing at NYU, which is when he picked up his first gig in the entertainment industry. He was invited to work with Derrick Comedy, a YouTube comedy group that gained popularity in the early 2000s. In 2009 they released “Mystery Team,” a short comedy film that went viral and began Glover’s introduction into comedy and T.V. writing. He didn’t realize this YouTube skit would lead him to this next opportunity.

From Comedy Clips To Comedy Fame

Glover’s “Mystery Team” short film let him to one incredible opportunity. After viewing his work, Tina Fey asked Glover to join NBC to write for the up-and-coming show 30 Rock. He was only 23 at the time. He was later cast for the part of Troy Barnes on the NBC show Community and eventually was able to write, produce and star in his own show, Atlanta. Glover won two Emmy awards for his work on Atlanta and became the first black director to win an Emmy in the Comedy category. Even with his massive success, Glover was determined to do more, and start his next project.

Glover Turns Gambino: Music Career and Stardom

After he gained notoriety in the film industry, Glover began his music project as a rapper/R&B artist under the name Childish Gambino. Glover says he got the name from a Wu-Tang Clan Name Generator. He said on Jimmy Fallon, “…we’re putting them all in, and they’re all funny and stuff, and then mine came up and I was like, ‘You guys, it’s not funny anymore. This is something big.'” Childish Gambino released Grammy-winning album Awaken, My Love! in 2016.

Across the Culture

Glover As A Millennial Icon

Tina Fey commented in Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential” issue in 2018 that “[Glover] embodies his generation’s belief that people can be whatever they want and change what it is they want, at any time.” He was also a very inspirational social media influencer, writing personal and vulnerable statuses that showed millennials that stars are genuine and share the same difficulties that they do. Surprising to many of his millennial fans, Glover was raised a Jehovah’s Witness and was not exposed to much T.V. or music in his childhood. Some say that is why he is so creative.
