They Thought It Was Just an Ordinary Tar Drum, Until They Saw What Was Inside

Ever wondered how you would react in an actual time of need? Well, these guys had the ultimate opportunity to find out, and it wasn’t going to be easy.
When they heard faint cries coming from an old tar drum, they had no idea what they would find inside or what they would need to do. Read on to learn more about the unexpected turn of events that all began with an innocent looking tar drum.

Faint cries

It was the middle of the day when volunteers from The vital rescue center Animal Aid Unlimited heard soft cries and whimpers coming out of an old tar drum, located in a junk yard. Not knowing what they would find inside, they began to investigate.

Inside the drum was an almost unrecognizable creature covered in thick, black tar. Because of the tar, it was glued to the metal and unable to move. It was obviously in agony.

Stuck inside

Whatever this creature was, it was in noticable pain. If they hadn’t gone closer, it would have probably perished soon after, having been stuck in the barrel for what seemed to be at least a couple of days.

But how did it get in the drum, and who was responsible for its sticky situation? Did someone pour tar over it, with the intention of making it suffer an agonizing end?

Stuck and Petrified

Upon closer inspection, the rescue workers found that the poor creature begging for its life was a female stray dog. Scared to death, the dog was hyperventilating. She had been stuck for a while and was probably accepting her fate.

She was also extremely dehydrated and starving, and in noticable pain. But getting her out of the drum was not going to be an easy task– it was practically impossible.

She was glued to the barrel

Tar is a thick, flammable liquid that is mainly used to make roads or for sealing rooftops. That is why when the stray dog crawled into the barrel and slept there with her warm body, it stuck to her like glue.

She couldn’t move at all as the tar hardened around her body. She was basically glued to the metal barrel and the only thing she could do was blink. She probably had been like that for days.

They first sawed the tar drum open

Animal Aid Unlimited immediately got to work on freeing her but it was going to be a long, delicate process. Since she couldn’t be moved in the drum, they had to first saw open the barrel.

Using a metal cutter and putting a blanket on top of the dog to protect her, they pried open the top of the barrel. She had so much terror in her eyes it was heartbreaking to watch but the animal rescuers kept at it.

Her body was deep in the tar

Now, they could see how deep she was in the hot tar and how this wasn’t going to be an easy task. It was almost like she was encased in this barrel like a statue.

One of the spokespeople for Animal Aid Unlimited stated, ‘The metal drum of tar had almost become a tomb for a beautiful street dog.” But now, she was going to be rescued no matter how long it took. They were determined to save her.

They transported her to the shelter

After they opened up the barrel, it was clear they would not be able to simply pull her out. That is why they decided they needed to transport her back to the shelter to dig her out.

They transported her still in the drum carefully by car and then carried her to a location where they could get to work. They kept petting her and trying to keep her as relaxed as possible but she was so terrified.

Vegetable oil was used to soften the tar

After they placed her down, they went right to work using vegetable oil to try to soften up the solid tar. They kept soaking and spreading the oil all over the tar and the terrified dog.

The reason why they used vegetable oil to break apart the tar is because since the oil is less dense, it has the ability to soften up the tar. Really, they could have used any oil but vegetable oil seemed to do the trick.

She was finally given some water

While they were working on getting her out of the tar, they kept giving her bowls of water. Considering how fast she drank them, it was clear she has been without water for days.

They had to free her head first, though, so she could drink but once they did, she was so grateful. She could have died from dehydration.

It was a huge challenge

They must have used so much vegetable oil to soften the tar enough so they could remove the dog from her bed. The problem was she had sunk so deep into the tar, her entire side of her body was encased in it.

Little by little, they were able to free a body part from the tar. They had to be careful not to rip out her skin but she was being very brave. She knew they were trying to save her.

Her skin was so burned and black

They eventually got her entire body free and lifted her out of the barrel. Now, they could see some of the damage and how much tar they had to remove from her body.

Her entire right side was covered in black tar but you could still see some of the burns. Some of her skin was even removed but luckily, she didn’t have any tar around her eyes.

They began to peel off the solid tar

The hardest part was removing the rock solid tar off of her tiny body. Again, they used vegetable oil to soak her body and soften the tar enough so it could be picked off.

The poor dog stayed very still as she laid on the floor with 5 people trying to remove the hardened tar from her body. It was so heavy on her skin she couldn’t move much anyway.

Three agonizing hours

For more than three hours, the animal rescuers worked tirelessly trying to free her body. She had so much tar on her and vegetable oil can only do so much.

Eventually, though, they removed enough of it so that she could finally stand up by herself. It was a long process by the poor dog was finally free. This wasn’t the end of her story, though.

They named her Asha

The dog that was on the verge of dying was able to make a full recovery and is now a very happy dog. You can still see her scars and patches of skin where the fur wasn’t able to grow back but other than that, you would have never known the ordeal she went through.

Her name now is Asha which means hope in Hindi. One of the shelter’s spokespeople said they gave her this name “because against all odds, she wouldn’t give up. And thanks to the strength you all give us, neither would we.” She really is a miracle!

Animal Aid Unlimited saved her life

Animal Aid Unlimited was established in India 15 years ago by Erika, Jim and Claire Abrams-Myers after they moved to the country from Seattle, Washington. They rescue thousands of animals every year who are dying in the streets just like Asha.

If the animals can’t recover enough to go back to living in the streets, then they are kept at the sanctuary. Asha loves hanging around the sanctuary, especially around those who saved her.

Asha wasn’t their only heroic rescue, though. Read on to learn about another animal they saved.

A puppy was left to die after an accident

A young puppy who had been living on the streets was hit by a car and left to die on the side of the road. The dog’s name is Jeremy and he suffered a lot of injuries from the accident.

His body was barely holding it together. He had so many deep wounds and his poor leg was completely crushed. It basically dangled from his skin and he couldn’t walk right. Jeremy was in so much pain.

He was taken off the streets

When Animal Aid Unlimited discovered his injured body, they knew they had to save him and make him a happy dog again. When they approached him, though, Jeremy tried to limp away because he was so scared.

They managed to get a hold of him and wrapped him in a blanket. The rescuers brought Jeremy back to their shelter to provide treatment to his wounds and give him some relief from his pain.

Jeremy began treatment right away

After he arrived at the sanctuary, Animal Aid Unlimited gave him pain medication to relieve some of his pain. His body was so wounded, though, and poor Jeremy kept shaking.

In order to treat his many wounds and leg, they had to sedate him—there was no one he would be able to sit through the pain of treating his injuries. There was far too many.

His poor body

During the accident, his teeth went right through his upper lip and had been stuck there every since so they had to remove them. It probably happened when he was jolted forward.

They also had to clean all the blood and dirt off of Jeremy’s skin to fully see the extent of his cuts. Then, they cleaned them with alcohol to prevent infections and stitched them up.

His leg had to go

Jeremy’s leg was so crushed and broken that they were not able to fix it in any way. Their only option was to amputate it. Jeremy was going to be a three-legged dog.

They immediately started the surgery where the poor puppy was, of course, sedated. It is heartbreaking that this dog would wake up to find his leg completely gone. He would never be the same again.

It would take weeks to heal

While his leg was the biggest injury, it would still take weeks for his other wounds to completely heal and to look normal again. Jeremy would also have to get used to only having three legs.

Animal Aid Unlimited worked very hard to heal all his wounds but the hardest thing was trying to lift Jeremy’s spirit again. He went through so much and still had a lot more to deal with. It was a never ending battle.

He was so shy

Jeremy was still that same shy dog that tried to run away from Animal Aid Unlimited and even after they treated him, he still would keep trying to hide. Would he ever be able to trust people again?

tar drum

dailymail.co.uk

He would just hobble around his cage on his three legs with such a sad face. Nothing seemed to make Jeremy happy anymore and it was so hard to watch. Not even puppies cheered him up. Will he ever find happiness again?

A turn for the better

It was hard to believe that Jeremy would ever be a happy puppy again but slowly, over time, it seeped back into him. His injuries eventually healed and the pain, or at least most of it, went away.

While the people at the shelter didn’t notice his newfound happiness at first, eventually his happy spirit was radiating throughout the shelter. Jeremy no longer hides in the shadows and now, interacts with other dogs and people.

His leg was cut off by a train

It happened in Udaipur, Rajasthan, and people traveling on that train were so startled to hear a distant scream when the train pulled up. When they followed the source of the noise, they came across a terrified dog.

His leg had been amputated by the train with nothing left but a stub. Animal Aid Unlimited was called and they came right away to find the dog hobbling around the tracks. The poor dog was in so much distress and clearly didn’t know what to do.

She was so scared

She was so scared and tried to run away from the Animal Aid Unlimited people but she couldn’t run very well. They kept following her, though, trying to give her crackers but she was so afraid.

Eventually, they caught her and wrapped her in a blanket. It is amazing that through it all, she still kept wagging her tail even while they wrapped up her badly damaged leg. They couldn’t amputate the rest of it right away because she lost so much blood.

Now, she is a happy little dog

After they were able to do surgery on her leg, all she needed to do was heal with time and she sure did. They named her Florence and was given a whole lot of tender, love, and care.

For a dog that got her leg chopped off by an incoming train, she sure was a happy one! Now, she is all healed and mastered walking and running about with only three legs! Through it all, she kept on wagging!
