Doctor Who Just Became A Doctor Witch, In A Dangerous Era

Published

BBC is taking i’t hit show Doctor Who to entirely new levels with its 11th season. In July of 2017 they announced Jodie Whittaker, a renown British actress, as the thirteenth Doctor for the show. Though there has been controversy over the casting choice, Jodie has proven herself as the perfect lead for the series’ new season.

Jodie Whittaker Cast As New Time Lord Causes Controversy

When Jodie Whittaker was announced as the new Doctor, many fans and critics were skeptical. Part of the negatively was undoubtedly rooted in misogyny, and partially in fans’ natural skepticism to change. However, Doctor Who’s appeal is in its ability to change and surprise viewers, which this season’s casting choice certainly did.

But, some critics did raise a valid question: what significance would the Doctor’s gender change have on the plot? Was BBC making the choice for the right reasons, or was this a low-level attempt to be more diverse while subsequently catering to the male gaze?

Why A Female Doctor Brings The Show Foreward

BBC proved it made the right decision in its eighth episode of season 11, “The Witchfinders.” The Doctor steps into 17th century England, and while trying to solve her own mystery gets caught up in a witch hunt and trial.

The Doctor’s gender plays a direct role in the episode, not only limiting her ability to move forward but subjecting her to dangers that a male Doctor would not face. This episode not only brings out historical truths, but parallels the struggle of modern women. The Doctors entanglement in the witch trial is similar to the scrutiny Jodie faced when taking on the role in the first place.

What To Expect With Season 12

Despite the naysayers, we can expect a truly exciting and fresh Doctor Who season to unfold. BBC has proved that their casting choice strengthens, rather than distracts from the progression of the episodes.
