Dad Surprises Son With Birthday Gift From Beyond the Grave
Just in case you had any doubts, the video below shows even adolescent metal heads have hearts.
16-year-old Johnny Crow has been having a tough time since his father died of a heart attack in April at the age of 49. But that still didn’t stop the late Mr. Crow from giving his son a gift for his birthday. According to Johnny’s 20-year-old sister, Chandler, their dad was always full of surprises.
Chandler picked her little brother up from school and took him to Port Huron Music Center, where he takes guitar lessons. She then handed Johnny a card from their father wishing him a “sweet 16”. The father’s writing also expressed the hope that his son would enjoy his gift.
The people working at the music store then brought out a guitar case. Inside was a Dean Razorback guitar—Johnny’s dream axe. His father ordered it for his son back in January. The music staff had kept it secret until for a month until their client’s special day.
“About a month ago I dropped Johnny off at his guitar lesson, and one of the amazing instructors told me there was something I should see,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “When he showed me I just dropped to my knees, I just couldn’t believe it. But I had to keep it secret until his birthday. So this morning I woke up and picked up my brother from school and blindfolded him. Drove him to the music center and this is the outcome.”
The Redditt community eventually got wind of the story and started making donations towards Johnny’s guitar lessons. Pete Kruse, the teen’s music instructor, explained that the music store had a PayPal account, and that anyone wanting to contribute could make a donation with a caption reading: “Happy Birthday, Johnny.”
Over $23,000 has since been raised since last week. The Crow family is currently speaking with a lawyer about how best to use the money for the young musician’s future. “We don’t need to give Johnny lessons for the next 16 years,” Kruse joked.
Johnny’s birthday surprise also got him tickets to see Alice Cooper. The Godfather of Shock Rock’s band member, Nita Strauss, reached out to Johnny’s guitar teacher and insisted on giving him and his family backstage passes for when they play Clarkston, Michigan, in September.
“Hey guys, Nita from Alice Cooper here,” Nita wrote. “Just messaged [Pete Kruse] to let him know that I’ll take care of passes for John to come backstage and say hi to Alice and the band at our show. I watched this video a bunch of times earlier today before I even knew he was coming to a show, and sent it to a bunch of guitar player friends… such an amazing moment! Can’t wait to meet John and the family!!”
