The Absolute Best Moments From The 2017 Golden Globes
January 8, 2017, was a night with emotions running high as Tonight show host Jimmy Fallon led the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Host Jimmy Fallon kept the evening full of humor and light-hearted comedic digs for entertainment.
A-list stars, such as Natalie Portman in her Prada gown and Zoe Saldana in Gucci, came dressed in their best evening attire to walk the famed red carpet in style. Whether you were vying for the prestigious Golden Globe statuette, first awarded on January 20, 1944, watching in support of someone, or simply observing as it was broadcast live, it was a night to remember.
For many, the 2017 Golden Globe ceremony was full of big surprises; for others, it was simply justifying what they already knew to be true. “La La Land” and “Moonlight” swept the categories as expected, but others were unexpected, as those who were considered to be category favorites were replaced by surprise winners. Many memorable speeches were given, such as Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy winner Tracee Ellis Ross for “black-ish,” who responded to the win with a quote dedicated to all women, no matter their color, letting them know that they are worthy, valid and important.
Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie went to Hugh Laurie for “The Night Manager.” In his speech, Laurie jokingly (we think) claims that his win was “obviously a terrible mix-up.” Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture was Viola Davis for “Fences,” who was considered to be the category favorite and followed her win up with a tear-jerking speech dedicated to her father, Dan Davis. Ryan Gosling continued the win for “La La Land” for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, and also continued the evening of emotional speeches by dedicating his award to his wife and the late Juan Carlos Mendes.
Another highlight of the 2017 Golden Globes was Viola Davis’s tribute to Meryl Streep for her Cecil B. DeMille award, honoring Streep’s lifetime achievement in contribution to the world of entertainment. Streep’s controversial speech, in which she discusses President-Elect Trump, made headlines and social media statuses quickly.
Culminating in an evening of jokes and laughter, shocks and highly charged emotions, Jimmy Fallon’s first time hosting the Golden Globes appeared to be an overall success.
