Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter Welcome Baby Number Two
According to reports, celebrity couple Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter have been blessed with baby number two, a boy named Hal Auden Cumberbatch. The actor, famous for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s hit Sherlock, and his wife, a theater director, welcomed their son on March 3rd, 2017 at London’s private £1,200-a-night Portland Hospital.
The couple ,who got married in February 2015, made their pregnancy public in October 2016 -after fans noticed Sophie’s baby bump while they were attending an event in Los Angeles to promote Cumberbatch’s latest film, Dr. Strange. Just five months after this, the happy couple welcomed a new family member.
Cumberbatch has seemingly named his new son after Shakespearean hero Hal. Henry V was initially known as Hal before becoming the hero of Agincourt. However Cumberbatch may also have been acknowledging his friendship with fellow actor Tom Hiddleston, with whom he starred in the television show Hollow Crown in 2012. The show was a combination of Shakespeare’s plays, where Cumberbatch was cast as Richard III and Hiddleston played the role of Prince Hal. They have been close friends ever since they met in 2010 on the set of War Horse, a film by Steven Spielberg.
In addition, it appears that Cumberbatch is thinking of making a slight change in his career. After becoming a father, he seems to be considering selecting only roles that his kids can watch. When appearing on the Good Morning Britain show recently, Cumberbatch said that he wants his children to know what he does for a living, but he is not able to due to certification issues. He added that even if he has done a bit of child-friendly work in the past, he plans to do more of it in future.
Sophie Hunter and Benedict Cumberbatch, 40, welcomed their first son Christopher Carlton (also known as Kit) in June 2015, only a few months after their wedding on Valentine’s Day. The actor has previously talked of adding to his brood. In an interview in 2013, he disclosed that whereas he had a happy childhood as an only child, he has always wanted to be a part of a larger family.
In his betrothal to the Oxford-educated Sophie, who is 39 years old, the star chose to announce it through an ad in the Times newspaper that cost £324. He is also said to have flown to Edinburgh to ask Sophie’s mother for permission before making his proposal. The couple first met in 2009 when they starred opposite one another in Burlesque Fairytales, but only began dating five years later, in 2014.
