Baby’s Makes Dramatic Recovery After ‘Jigsaw Puzzle’ Skull Surgery

Lucy may only be a baby but she has already gone through so much. At just seven months old, Lucy was diagnosed with Craniosynostosis, a condition wherein the skull fused together prematurely leaving no room for the baby’s brain to grow. To save her life and give her a chance at a normal life, surgeons had to cut the top of her skull into several pieces and re-position them afterward.

Fortunately, the 5-hour long operation was such a success that 10 months later, baby Lucy is completely healed from the condition that would have caused her learning and sight problems as well as severe brain damage.

“We were terrified when we found out that Lucy’s entire skull would have to be rebuilt,” Lucy’s mom, Hanna, told the Caters News. “But we knew this would prevent her from developing life threatening issues as she grows.”

She had sepsis and a hole in her lung when she was born, causing her to stay in the NICU for a week. After recovering from all that, she was diagnosed almost 2 months later with Craniosynostosis that required her to undergo a dangerous and risky procedure.

“After her diagnosis, we knew surgery was the only option, but there was the risk that she might not pull through, it was the longest day of our lives,” recalled Hanna. “During surgery, the top of her skull was taken off and cut into sections, some parts were cut off completely and others were re-positioned, just like a jigsaw puzzle.”

Most of Lucy’s scars have long healed and those that remained have been covered by her hair to the delight of her family.

“She was left with a zig zag scar from ear to ear, but it has since healed nicely and her hair covers most of it. Lucy is now doing amazingly well and has been so much happier since the operation, she is meeting all her milestones and started walking two weeks ago.”
