This Army Vet’s Business is the Definition of ‘Leave No Man Behind’

When Tim Smith came home from the Army in 2007, he had been through hell. The last thing that he needed upon returning home was another struggle. But unfortunately, that’s exactly what he got. Like many veterans, Smith struggled to find job when he returned to civilian life. He continued to search until, finally, he came up with a solution: He started a business of his own.

Smith opened up Patriot Commercial Cleaning, offering janitorial services for offices and businesses. He couldn’t do all the work himself, so he had to hire employees. But he didn’t hire just anyone—he hired other former veterans, like himself.

He now employs over 40 men and women who retired from military service and needed to find civilian work to get their life started again. Together, the Patriot team is dedicated not just to leaving places sparkling clean, but also to supporting each other through the challenges of life after service.

Many veterans struggle when they return home after service. The transition can leave them with anxiety, depression, and even PTSD. Smith is one of many soldiers who encountered tragedy during his tours abroad. When a roadside bomb killed eight of his fellow soldiers in 2004, it felt to him like he’d lost a part of his family. Now, Smith’s cleaning business gives him the opportunity to work alongside fellow military members once more, even if it is in a different setting.

Patriot puts veterans to work on a team — one that the employees say feels just as much a family as their old military units. They help each other out, do things for each other, and have formed bonds that will last a lifetime. It just goes to show that even though they’re no longer serving, veterans still have plenty to offer.
