There are specific roles that mean a lot more than just reading lines. It means spending a bit more time in the gym than usual. It might be a hassle, but the end result will leave people speechless. When it comes to training, these five actresses went above and beyond for the camera.

Alison Brie

In Netflix’s Glow, Alison Brie takes on the role of pro wrestler, Ruth Wilder. To prepare for the show, she amped up her workout routine with 80lbs. split squats and chin pushups. “I came out of it feeling like a totally different person. It changed everything,” she told Women’s Health.

Netflix

Demi Moore

One of Demi Moore’s most beloved roles was in 1997’s G.I. Jane. To get a true military workout, Moore teamed up with Navy SEAL instructor, Stephen Helvenston. “It was interesting to step into the real-life experiences of what the SEALs go through,” she told Film Scouts.

Buena Vista Pictures

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank gained 19 pounds of muscle for her Oscar-winning work in 2004’s Million Dollar Baby. Film producer Clint Eastwood was a bit concerned about her small size at first. “She was like a feather, but what happened is she had this great work ethic,” he told 60 Minutes. Swank, who spent her time in Brooklyn’s Gleason’s Gym, managed to train with a severe staphylococcus infection.

Alicia Vikander

Portraying Lara Croft in the 2018 remake of Tomb Raider was a tall task for Alicia Vikander. The Oscar winner went from avoiding the gym to working out nonstop for four months. “I did some boxing, climbing, swimming. I lifted more weights than I’ve ever done in my life,” she told E! News.

Warner Bros.

Gal Gadot

As Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot knew she had to portray the role in a proper manner. For nine straight months, the actress called the gym her home. Aside from building muscle, Gadot had to learn how to handle a sword and ride a horse. “It’s been very intensive, but it’s paid off,” she told ABC 7.
