Your Favorite 90’s Stars Then and Now!
If you were around during the 1990’s, there’s no way you could have missed these famous faces. They dominated your TV screen, the fashion magazines and the Hollywood red carpet. But what are they up to today?
1. Kirstie Alley
Back in the day, Kirstie Alley starred in the most popular sitcom of the day… Cheers! She had one of the most speculative romances on the show with Sam, who was played by Ted Danson. Their will they/won’t they romance was the talk of the town. This wasn’t her only gig, however. She also starred in the Look Who’s Talking franchise and Drop-Dead Gorgeous.
Alley also starred in Veronica’s Closet in the late 1990’s. However, by 2005, everybody stopped talking about Alley’s career and began talking about her dramatic weight gain. She took control of the situation, though, by joining Dancing With The Stars and becoming a Jenny Craig ambassador, and managed to shed most of it off.
2. Alicia Silverstone
Silverstone’s big breakout role was in Aerosmith’s “Crazy” video alongside Liv Tyler. She then joined the cast of Clueless in 1995, propelling her into stardom. She became so popular, in fact, that she signed a $10 million multi-picture contract with Columbia-TriStar.
She would play Batgirl in Batman and Robin, among other roles, but never reaching as much fame as before. In May 2011, Silverstone gave birth to a baby boy named Bear Blu Jarecki. Her most recent cause for media attention was, however, a very strange video of her chewing her baby’s food and then feeding it to him.
3. Carmen Electra
Carmen Electra was one of the Baywatch beauties who donned that iconic red swimsuit and would strut around the beach, turning heads everywhere. She became quite popular, and in 1998, married Dennis Rodman in Las Vegas.
Their union was short-lived, however, and in 2003, Electra married again, this time to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. They had a reality television show together, but again, their marriage was short, and ended after five years. The marriage drama seems to have left no impact on Electra, who doesn’t look like she aged a day since her red swimsuit days!
4. Christina Applegate
Christina Applegate got her big break on the sitcom Married With Children, playing daughter Kelly Bundy. This wasn’t the only show she was doing, though. She also appeared on Saturday Night Live and 21 Jump Street. It wasn’t long before she started working in film, and appeared on Don’t Tell Mum The Babysitter’s Dead and Mars Attacks.
In the 1990’s, Applegate was in the pop girl group The Pussycat Dolls, before getting the star role in the sitcom Jesse. Applegate continues acting today in films such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. She has also made headlines for beating cancer and inspiring the world.
5. Claudia Schiffer
Claudia Schiffer was one of the biggest supermodels of the 1990’s. She was often praised for her resemblance to Brigitte Bardot and became one of the leading models for Chanel. She also became an ambassador for L’Oréal, and still is today!
In 2011, Schiffer launched a career as a fashion designer, debuting her own range of luxurious cashmere clothing at Paris Fashion Week. She is currently worth an estimated $55 million, making her one of the most successful models in history.
6. Jenny McCarthy
Back in the 1990’s, Jenny McCarthy had the fantastic job of being an MTV VJ back when MTV was at its prime. She was also one of the most well-known Playboy playmates of the 90’s. This led to her landing The Jenny McCarthy Show, and eventually, Jenny.
The show was short-lived, however, though in 2006 McCarthy moved on to star in Dirty Love, which won 4 Razzie Awards for worst movie, worst actress, worst screenplay and worst director. Ouch. Nowadays, McCarthy lives out her days married to former New Kids On The Block member Donnie Wahlberg.
7. Lara Flynn Boyle
Lara Flynn Boyle shot to stardom in the 1990’s television show Twin Peaks as the stunning Donna Hayward. She then appeared in many films, including Threesome and Happiness.
In 1997, Boyle lost out on the starring role in Ally McBeal to Calista Flockhart, but the show’s creator David E. Kelly liked her so much he created a role for her in The Practice, which ran until 2003. Unfortunately, the beautiful actress seems to have visited the plastic surgeon’s office once too many times.
8. Michelle Pfeiffer
Who doesn’t know about Michelle Pfeiffer, that white gold? She had some of the most iconic roles of the 1990’s, including Catwoman in Batman Returns, which would cement her status as a celebrity and get her noticed for bigger, better roles.
She would also act in films such as The Age of Innocence and Dangerous Minds. Recently, Pfeiffer has continued acting, starring in Hairspray, Dark Shadows, and The Family.
9. Pamela Anderson
Pamela Anderson was probably the biggest bombshell of the 1990’s. She defined the sunny California look and became one of the biggest sex icons in history, especially after posing for Playboy magazine. She actually appeared on the magazine’s cover more times than any other celebrity! She then got a role on Baywatch as C. J. Parker, though these days she doesn’t act so much.
She had a fling of romances with Tommy Lee, model Marcus Schenkenberg and Kid Rock. Nowadays, Anderson has become an animal rights activist, appearing in several campaigns for PETA.
10. Shannen Doherty
Not everyone gets to star in a cult hit, but Shannen Doherty was lucky enough to star in Heathers! After this, she would go on to star in Beverly Hills, 90210 as the iconic Brenda Walsh. But that wasn’t all! She played the charming witch, Prue Halliwell, in Charmed, but unfortunately, her relationship with co-star Alyssa Milano wasn’t so good, and Doherty ended up leaving the hit show.
Aaron Spelling, who created 90210, was so mad about this that he banned Doherty from any future Spelling productions… Ever since then, Doherty’s career hasn’t been the same. More recently, Doherty has gone public about her battle with breast cancer.
11. Tiffany Amber Thiessen
Tiffany Thiessen was on some pretty iconic shows during the 1990’s, including Saved By The Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210! Unfortunately for Thiessen, her personal life went awry when her boyfriend David Strickland (from Suddenly Susan) committed suicide.
Recently, Thiessen has been starring in the USA Network crime series White Collar as the savvy Elizabeth Burke.
12. Heather Locklear
Heather Locklear has had a pretty busy career, propelling to stardom with her role as Amanda Woodward on Melrose Place, then moving on to other shows! She’s also played Sammy Jo Carrington in Dynasty and Caitlin Moore in Spin City.
Unfortunately, in 2012, Locklear started making headlines for being “out of control” on drugs and alcohol. She’s gotten better since then, though, and is now starring in Hot in Cleveland.
13. Lucy Lawless
Lucy Lawless is a huge figure among all things nerdy, as she became extremely successful for playing the title role in Xena: Warrior Princess. After this, she would move on to play D’Anna Biers/Number Three (Cylon) in Battlestar Galactica, as well as having a major role in the Spartacus television series.
Most recently, Lawless acted in a dramatic series called Top of the Lake, which took place in her native New Zealand.
14. Cindy Crawford
Cindy Crawford is one of the most beautiful and elegant models ever, and was in her heyday during the 1990’s. In 1995, she was even named the highest paid model in the world by Forbes magazine!
During this time, she was married to Richard Gere and living the life. VH1 placed her at #3 on the “40 Hottest Hotties of the 90s” and Men’s Health dubbed her as one of the “100 Hottest Women of All-Time.” Needless to say, she’s had a great career! More recently, her daughter and mini-me, Kaia Jordan Gerber, began her own modeling career. Talk about good genes!
15. Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar is an iconic actress, and will be recognized by many for her roles in television shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and movies such as Scooby Doo. Of course, she also had a huge role in some iconic horror films during the 1990’s, including I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2.
Later, she would act in Cruel Intentions and The Grudge. More recently, she worked on the TV show The Crazy Ones until Robin Williams’ tragic death.
16. Danielle Fishel
Danielle Fishel first propelled into stardom by playing Topanga Lawrence in the hit 1990’s show Boy Meets World. She would star on the show until its end in 2000, then move onto host Style Network’s The Dish.
Later, she appeared in National Lampoon’s Dorm Daze and became a NutriSystem advocate. Nowadays, you can find her reprising her role of Topanga Lawrence on the Boy Meets World spinoff, Girl Meets World!
17. Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston is well-loved by many. She quickly became one of the biggest stars to roam the planet when she starred on the sitcom Friends as the iconic Rachel, whose hair was an icon on its own. She garnered lots of laughs and admirers, including Brad Pitt, to whom she was married for five years.
She has continued acting, mainly in many romantic comedies, and was even honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in February 2012! Recently, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work in the film Cake.
18. Neve Campbell
Neve Campbell starred as the gorgeous Julia Salinger in the drama Party of Five, making her mark as a blossoming starlet. She then appeared in the iconic slasher film Scream as Sidney Prescott, alongside several other 90’s idols, including Courtney Cox, Drew Barrymore and David Arquette.
She also starred in 3 Scream sequels, and has continued acting in smaller roles. She now spends her time with her baby Caspian, who is currently 4 years old.
19. Gillian Anderson
Gillian Anderson had one of the best roles during the 1990’s as Special Agent Dana Scully on the creepy but thrilling The X Files. She was only 24 when she started the show, but boy was she good! She won several awards for her performance, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series.
She later made headlines for posing nude with a strategically placed eel in an effort to raise awareness for the world’s oceans. Most recently, she appeared in the thrilling but gruesome television series Hannibal, and has even agreed to reprise her role as agent Scully in the newest season of The X Files.
20. Jenna Elfman
Jenna Elfman broke a lot of hearts during the 1990’s. She lived on everyone’s radar! Her big debut came in Dharma and Greg in 1997 when she played the role of flower child Dharma Freedom Montgomery. She would then star in Keeping the Faith alongside Ben Stiller and Edward Norton.
Her career has slowed down a bit since then, though she’s had plenty of cameo appearances on show like Two and a Half Men and Friends with Benefits. Recently, she’s made headlines for being a member of the Church of Scientology!
21. Jennifer Love Hewitt
Jennifer Love Hewitt was in some of the biggest teen movies during the 1990’s, including Party of Five and I Know What You Did Last Summer! However, after these films she had a couple of bad ones, such as Heartbreakers, and a pop career that failed to fully flourish.
It didn’t take too long for her career to make a comeback, though, as she got a starring role in the suspenseful television program The Ghost Whisperer. After that, she made headlines for a surprise wedding and baby in November 2013!
22. Tori Spelling
Tori Spelling, just like several of the other leading ladies on this list, got her big break on the dramatic sitcom Beverly Hills, 90210 playing Dona Martin! However, her acting career didn’t go very far after that.
Spelling made headlines a couple of years back for some botched plastic surgeries and bad films, as well as reality television shows that she’s been a part of. She’s also had an on-off relationship with Dean McDermott, which was fully captured on their reality TV shows, Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood and True Tori.
23. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
So, these two lovely ladies were still pretty young during the 1990’s, but they already had some pretty booming careers! They were huge stars during this decade, as they both played the sassy and super cute Michelle Tanner in the incredibly popular Full House.
After acting in the memorable sitcom, they made lots of movies, including Billboard Dad, Passport to Paris, and Switching Goals. Since then, they have started running two fashion labels, The Row and Elizabeth & James.
