After 20 Years, Terry Gilliam Is Finally Set To Release His ‘Don Quixote’ Film

If you’ve ever tried working on a project for a long time, director Terry Gilliam feels your pain. Luckily, the Monty Python member will finally release something he’s been working on for 20 years soon.

Seeing The Light Of Day

Gilliam is slated to release The Man Who Killed Don Quixote in the near future via Amazon. To show everyone that it’s actually done, he dropped a 90-second trailer.

The film follows a man thinking he’s Don Quixote and his misadventures through both 17th and 21st centuries. Starring in the film is Emmy-nominated actor Adam Driver, actress Olga Kurylenko, and actor Jonathan Pryce. Gilliam and Pryce have worked together on the films BrazilThe Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and The Brothers Grimm.

A Massive Roadblock

Before the film can be released, there’s still a major issue at hand. In 2016, producer Paulo Branco allowed Gilliam to do the film in exchange for the film’s rights. Unfortunately, Branco didn’t deliver on the financial portion of the deal. Gilliam grabbed another producer and got the movie made.

The film was slated to premiere at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival until it was cancelled due to the deal. Branco states that the film cannot be released until he approves of it. On June 15th, the court will determine who owns the rights.

A 20 Year Struggle

Gilliam originally started working on the film back in 1998. While filming back in 2000, a string of bad incidents forced the director to cancel the entire project.

Over the years, Gilliam tried to revive the project on multiple occasions. During most of this time, Johnny Depp was connected to the film. Due to work in Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice In Wonderland, he dropped from Don Quixote.
